Cool Where do you guys hide your radar detector wire?

I bought a radar detector recentley that you have to plug into the cigarrette lighter to power. I have a lot of excess wire, where should I go about hiding this wiring? Is there any other power source I can give it other than the cig. lighter? Like can I tap into a constant power, or a switched power somewhere, instead of using the cig. lighter? I've heard of people running them through the A Pillar, where exactly is the A Pillar on the car?

Thanks for your help.

Im not certain but I am guessing the 951 has a light on the roof near the rear view mirror. Tapping into that wire could be a good solution. I got a Solo S2 Cordless for Christmas and it is a great solution to the wire problem.

Dittos on the cordless!

As for the A pillar it is that black support that you see in between the windshield and your window. And yes, any 12v source will work as lond as you splice the wires properly.

The a pilar is the body component on either side of the windshield. The trim can be difficult to remove, especially the top screw I believe. It looks like it is straight in, but it's straight up rather, kinda missleading if you go by the way the hole is in the panel. I would say tap it off of the dome light power instead if you store your detecor in your visor. But only try this if you know your way around wiring. It's not like there's allot up there to get confused with, but if you don't know your way around it I would get the help of someone who does. Disconect the Battery if you do try this, and make sure your carefull. I believe the dome light is fused, but I don't know the current drain of radar detectors.

For anyone wondering, it's some cheap detector I scored for $30.
It's a Whistler DE-1730 Radar Detector.

Do you not think that that CHP'ers have a membership to this ring? Hide it behind the glove box.

Also, where do you guys mount your detectors? Mine is placed right above the AC vents in the center. Do any of you have pictures of your installs?

I have the Escort 8500 with the optional smartwire. I put the Radar Detector above the rear view mirror. Run the wire along top of the windshield, down the a-pillar, under the dash and to the accessory wire that runs the radio. It is out of sight.

I just keep it on the dash, if I get a strong signal I put it on the seat. No one's going to see the wire on the highway.

I've heard that installing it up high behind the black mask can reduce sensitivity. The $30 ebay specials work fine.

I've got mine wired into the dome light. hide the excess wire behind the interior trim of the windshield. the detector is mounted center of the windshield right below the mirror. looks nice, but I've not used it in a LONG time. maybe I should get in the habit again...

use a dremel and put a small hole in the interior lite to run the wire thru. connect to the 12v at the back and use a auto reset circuit breaker in the circuit instead of the fuse, insulate and tuck it all back in except for enough wire to plug into your dectector. i made a offset bracket from alum and screwed it into the trim to mount on. hinders the pass sun thing when trying to push it down/forward.

Sweet, you got any pics of the install? Any details on the wiring? What kinda detector do you got? I'll try and talk to you on AIM to make it simpler.

The factory installed a 1989 Whisler 500.. but it is mounted under the dash near the right leg, and wired to a remote sensor under the front valance. Works awesome on radar, but not laser detection.
