I haven't run front or back cover in years on my street car. Sees plenty of miles. Everything is way easier to check on.
+1 I also track my car and I have been in the gravel with w/no ill effects : )

It all comes down to risk acceptance and personal preference. I accept the risk and prefer to never have to remove them again. I do run the factory plastic belly pan.

I run the covers on my daily driver but no covers on my two race cars. Never had a problem

Is there a good way to line up the balance shafts without the rear cover?

While I'm against runing without the covers, the balance shafts key way are straight up when the crank is at TDC. Definitely can be eye ball.
