Almost done going through the front of the engine on 1984 n/a (water pump, belts, seals, etc, etc.....). This car came to me without either of the front timing covers. The owner is only going to use it for track days and the rare auto cross. Anyone have any experience running with out them? It would definitely make checking things easier at the track.
I run a track car as well and although I have an additional screen across the front, I still run with the timing covers. Given the possibility of ever running off into the gravel traps , I'd hate for anything to come up and to get into timing belts. If it wasn't an interference engine, I'd wouldn't sweat it, but...
My back cover is in place, but I've never gotten around to putting the front one on. And when I drive the car (it's been on jack stands for the last year) I drive it alot.
Good lord, I am more undecided than before I asked the question! Everyone makes great points. I am now thinking maybe I should at least get the bottom cover. Or maybe fab one up with some expanded metal so he can keep an eye on things.
Yup, and you wouldn't believe the dry sump belts we lose on the race cars because of no belts. Gravel and crap gets in the pulleys and starts nicking them and the belts eventually let go. If you watched the 4 hour IMSA race at Daytona this year, the Mod space mustang blew the motor when the dry sump belt shredded from pulley damage.
