I know how that goes. Pulla customers eagle talon in for a brake job. Get it finished start it up waiting for the shop door to open to back it it quits- T-belt broke bent the valves. All while sitting there idling. Luckily the customer was understanding of the situation!

Badcoupe. Just curious, but did the tech point out the mileage and have the service writer question the customer about the timing belt?

If I was the customer I'd be kinda p-oed that I wasn't told the timing belt was at the end of its useful life and didn't I want to change it.

No I own my shop. This actually happened when I first working out there for grandpa before he decided to semi retire. The car was only in for a brake job. Owner had never had the belts replaced or checked. Many people aren't smart enough to keep up with how their car is serviced and what it needs mileage etc. It would've happened to him sooner or later. He ended up paying parts and we provided labor. He came out ahead on the deal compared to if it happened to him. We offered to pay all cost but he insisted that he pay parts cost. A fellow business owner himself he understands what it takes to run a business etc.

Just from experience, on my old 86' 951 I went to start it once and the timing belt broke while the engine was turning over. I put a new timing belt on the car after realigning everything and the car started up just fine and I did a compression check and everything was back to normal, no bent valves or anything.

I am really sorry to hear what happened to you. However, I have some real questions regarding the "master" who checked your car out. When one of my friends decided to buy a 944S my guy wouldn't let him buy the car unless it was at his shop first before closing the deal.

The owner was not able to document the last time the belt was changed. To me anyone knowing these cars and interference motors would check the belts condition. Or if like in my friend's case the owner wouldn't allow the for the pulling of the covers (time issue) tell you to let it move on.

I am not sure that I would use him again

Heath, I share your pain, I had a similar experience almost as bad.

Bought the car from a friend of a friend. Some things in minor disrepair (cracks in taillight, etc) but overall in great shape at a great price, owner showed proof the belts were done about 8k miles ago. I also take it to a Porsche dealer for an inspection, belts are OK. I spent a month fixing it up and driving it to learn manual (my first stick shift car). I put it into a tuner shop for fixes I couldn't do myself, lose the car for a month, and once again asked them to check the belts, they say they are OK. Get the car back, drive it to work from the shop. Driving home that night, 2 miles from work, everything dies. Timing belt jumped off the tensioner, bent valves. #!$#!@#@!!

I just got it back on Dec. 23, about $5500 later between the two visits to the shop.

I'm beginning to think when we take posession of these cars, we should have them towed to a shop and IMMEDIATELY have the belts changed, regardless of what the PO says and did.

water pump

reco'd the head
all the intake valves
shifter linkage and boot
new dash skin
new windscreen
engine seals front and back
balance shaft
and thats about it so far...

For them to do the rear engine seal, they'd have to pull out everything from the clutch on back, so I'd imagine that should have been replaced too.
