Default Running Ccccccold

It's getting colder here and I have noticed my temp gauge isn't moving much. Its the early gauge with the 3 dashes in the middle and it isn't even getting up to the first mark. Not much heat coming from the vents either. I have checked the fluid level and everything looks OK. Is it possible the thermostat is stuck open (or missing)? Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Happy Holidays!

Yup, very much possible.

How long have you had the car? How long have you noticed the problem for?

Is the oil even coming up to temp?

Yes, it's sound like the thermostat is stuck open. Also check the Heater valve between the engine and firewall. (At least that's where it is at on later 944's.) You might just have lower temps, but even when mine is on the first dash above cold, I feel heat from the vents.

Is the engine consuming more fuel? A cold engine will run rich until warm. (Will be a little "groggy" too.)

It has always ran on the cool side a little bit. I have had the car for about 9 months now. During the summer the gauge would run about straight up and down after driving for 30 minutes or so. It does seem to be running a bit rich as well. Here is a pic of where the needle sits most of the time.

Is the thermostat easy to replace? Anyone know where the heater valve is n the early models?

Thanks!
