Default Odometer replaced gear now another problem

I replaced the small gear which fixed the odometer for a bit but now it stopped working again. I noticed when I had it apart that there was a lot of play on the shaft that has the gears attached to the wheels that show the mileage numbers. In fact they were so loose I could have changed the mileage reading by turning the various gear wheels. So I assume that they must now be slipping and not turning.
Has anyone had this problem and know how to fix it? Thanks for feedback.

how many miles did you drive before it stopped working? I had to put one in mine and i have been driving for about 1000 miles. You must have done this already but when i changed mine there was a lot of small plastic parts from the old gear that i had to clean of. If you miss one of them they will get caught in the new gear and stop working. if you do take it apart again, buy a can of keyboard air cleaner and blow that crap off and make sure to get in the small openings.

If the gear is moving on the shaft and disengaging, put a small washer behind it.

Take a picture of it so we can see what you are talking about. I have 6 or 7 clusters for the later cars floating around in the garage and if you need the speedo cluster, I have spare ones with bad gear you just replaced for free if you come and pick up. You can change the mileage to what your car is originally even in a good odometer. This is the reason I never trust "low mileage" cars unless I check the car out and see the documents.

Thanks for your advice and offer of spare parts. I'm not sure when I going to take it out, since I don't have a garage and the weather has gotten cold here in Maryland. I think I will also try putting a washer on the shaft. I was curious if others have done this.
