Default Finnally! I get to see my car!!!

After five grueling months, I came home from school in North Dakota for winter break here to Los Angeles, and saw my car!!! So happy! Too bad my battery is flat! She cranked a couple times and thats all she wrote, battery gone. Sooo off to Pep Boys tomorrow, if anyone has any suggestions on good batteries (especially for sitting un-used for a week or two at a time) for around 70 bucks, speak up, otherwise, this is just an extatic post about seeing my car!

Heh...I had a similar experience in July...I lived in Paris for 10 months this past year, 10 months without driving my car...the only thing I got close was driving a rental car, a Fiat Punto 1.2L...omg what piece...
But it felt good to see my car again...got pretty dusty, the alarm system drained my battery...but she was up and running pretty quick...but soon needed leaky fuel lines replaced and timing belt and water pump (car was in storage previously for over 5 years)...she deserved it though, and now she purrs like a kitten, as she should for 78000km in July...

you dont really need a battery as much as you need it recharged. what you really need more than anythink is to go buy a trickle charger, to keep it charged when your gone. (do a search on the 911 board, trickle chargers have been discussed to death there recently)

if youre really gonna go buy a new batterey

for about 100 bucks at cosco, you can get an optima batterey. id say if youre price range is 70 (which is fickin high for a batterey anyways), might as well pony up the 30 extra to get the best batterey on the market. optima is a dry cell, so battery acid will not leak ever. also, they hold a charge better and longer than every batterey in the market.

Interstate Batts are the best if you absolutely need one... Otherwise do what Harry suggested and buy one of the chargers and get her all charged up... Whatever you do, don't go out and buy a battery from your Porsche Dealer... Its just a battery....

(PS. I get to see my car tomorow too!!! Finally get her back from the shop!!!!!)

That, and next time you leave the car sitting for a while, disconnect the negative terminal (if you don't have the trickle charger). I'd also recommend bumping the tire pressures 10 psi or so up from normal to keep them round

Glad to see you made it home ok Eyal. Speaking of batteries anyone have suggestions for good batteries in the winter? I will be replacing mine as it's quite the POS.

Congrats on the reunion. It's still going to be awhile before I can say the same!

As for batteries, Interstate are definitely good, but I've had equal or better results with Diehard batteries, from SEARS. Right around what you're looking to spend and they have a great warranty.

My 951 has sat for over a year at a time and the only thing I do is disconnect the negative cable. It's fired right up every time!

Like Harry said, recharge the battery first -- just jump-start the car and go for nice long drive -- you're over due for a long cruise anyways!

Allright, I got the car started, no thanks to the battery. (I live on a hill) went for a nice long canyon drive, and couldnt eb happier right now, I came back, let her rest 10 minutes, then cranked, she started. I don't know if its good or not, but it did start. the reason the battery wasnt disconnected was cause it was started/driven once a week. what do you think, and I know about the trickle charger. thanks everyone!

Eyal, starting your car once a week and letting it idle for 10 mins wont do anything to keep it charged.

an alternator keeps the battery charged. letting it idle for 10 mins or so wont create enough power to allow the alternator to recharge. for the alternator to rehcarge the battery it actually needs to be driven for 15-20 mins or so, at free way speeds. becuase it just sat at idle it wouldnt have charged. it was not driven, so it did not charge.

also, it is better to completely remove the batterey when in storage, if it is not a dry cell batterey, as batterey acid will leak eventually, and will carrode, rust, and eat away at your car (galvanized or not). also this will help for it to keep its charge.
