Painting Rocker Panels
The rocker panel on the DS of my car is perfect, but the PS is chipped, and also appears to be a slightly lighter color than the rest of the car. No one notices but me, so maybe I'm crazy about the color difference, but the chips are definitely there.
I bought a spray can of factory matched paint and clear coat from paintscratch.com. I had them add the "flex" to it to that is supposed to make it more rubbery.
I plan to paint the PS rocker panel next week when I'm on vacation. I'm assuming that since the rocker panel is so low on the car and is a different texture than the smooth finish, that if I mask off the line right on the top edge of the rocker and do a relatively decent job, that it can't possibly look any worse than it does now.
Has anyone done anything like this using just a spray can, and do you have any suggestions/comments?

Jim,
Mask off everything you don't want painted. Then, use a maroon scotch brite pad to scuff the paint. Then wipe it down with a grease/wax remover and paint away. Remember, the many light coats are better than one heavy one.

Silver is tough to get to match since it seems to get darker with each successive coat. Follow the advice above and use several light coats until it matches, then go with clear over it.

I don't think matching my silver (Sapphire) color will be a problem, since I have bought touch up for the car from paintscratch.com before, and it matched perfectly. Thanks for all the info, I'll go for it next week.

Old thread resurection!!
I was thinking of doing this on my car--the nubbly rocker panels are chipped and kinda faded looking. Would I be getting overspray everwhere if I do it outside? Inside the garage? I'd hate to have great looking rockers, and white paint dots all over the rest of the car!
I also assume that if the rockers are lightly scuffed, I woudln't need a primer, right?

Only if mis-applied. A lot of the new stuff you can get is actually quite good.
Anyone remember mideastmafia's car? I believe that was entirely painted with spray cans. It's all in the prep and how well it's sanded down afterwards.

I used Paintscratch color-matched Graphite Metallic aerosol when I painted the 968 mirrors, door handles, and turbo rear valance on my old '85.5. The match was spot-on and they turned out perfect. I also used Paintscratch color-matched Nile Green aerosol to paint the splitters on my 951.
As usual, good prep, followed by wet & dry color sanding, polishing/compounding, etc. will give you excellent results.

Ehall, I assume Andy is not referring to the turbo/S2 aero pieces, but the actual rocker panels (sheetmetal) with the rubberized coating.

Ken, you got it.
Also, luckily, Alpine White is the same as VW #3300 paint...which I think is available at Pep Boys!
