I have spent about $1500 over the last 7 years to maintain my '84 944 and that includes 4 Yellow Koni's. (this does not include tires, oil and wipers).

You can go back and forth with that one. Assuming you have say a 84 and an 87 in identical condition, the 87 will cost more. The 87 has the aluminum control arms and cant use bilstein shocks. That adds $$ to maintenance. On the other hand, the 84 has a mechanical speedometer gear that likes to cause headaches.

The water pump, timing belts, etc are the same $$. Brakes are the same. I think I hit the big one with the suspension.

There's a certain perverse wisdom in that advice; a newer car may be cheaper to maintain since it doesn't need as much maintenance. Parts may not be any cheaper but they're easier to find. But you need to factor in the relative prices of the cars themselves.

I suppose it depends on what you want from the car?

I just went on their site. They have a red turbo and a white NA. Which one are you interested in? The white NA has sport seats. Nice once you are in the car, not so easy to get in and out because of the big bolsters. While the mileage is low, it was probably a lot of local driving based on the condition of the shift ****.

What I don't like about the site is no link to a Carfax, and no discussion of maintenance. I don't like no pictures of the dash, which makes me assume it is cracked. If you got that white one for the 5300 it is currently at, and you don't do the work yourself, get ready for a timing belt job. It was about 700 back in 05. No mention of the clutch, etc. You can easily put nothing in the car and enjoy it for a few years and sell it, or you could be in for a few grand for a clutch, brakes, etc. and the 5k car can top 10. The shift ****, wrong size wheels, and cheezy amp and what may be a hack job with the speakers make me think a kid had it. That could mean a lot of jackrabbit starts which supports the potential new clutch.

I could go on, and on, like the thread hanging on the steering wheel picture. My burgundy interior S2 had thread that disintegrated while the black interior with more miles was fine. I bought thread and sewed it back together.

The point is if you are buying from a dealer, or auction be prepared for surprises. There are cars within a few hundred miles of anyone with records, and with a community like rennlist, there are people who can look at the car for you before you get a PPI or link you to a seller.

Decide what you want, chances are someone on the board will know someone with what you want.
Take a look at this ad. Even though the odometers roll this is original if it really is a one owner 84 with 41k miles. is it worth the 7900 asking price? I don't know. But it has all of its records, so you can figure out what it may need. https://cosprings.craigslist.org/cto...467239969.html
Here is an S with a very high asking price, but that's just the asking price. it looks like a solid low mileage car. https://fortmyers.craigslist.org/col...467903921.html I don't like that this one has the wrong muffler, but I do like the dash doesn't have cracks. Still, he is asking high S2 money for a S, and S money is about the same as NA money. But, it is closer to you, and you can test drive it to see if it is what you want. Cant do that with a long distance auction.
The two I highlighted are the kind of cars I would look for. More $ to get into, but less $ in the long run.

Default 944

Thank you Tom, I agree with you . Also the base pretty white is being adv as 190 hp , its not correct!! The S has 190hp in 87, This is the 2nd time they mis adv the engine in their P cars, Last time I had to write them and inform them that a 944 does not have a 911 engine !! as advertised !! so yes they are too risky the way I see it. and rather arrogant with me when e mailing , and never answering my questions !! I had heard bad things in the b past . The car really looks pretty ! (:
Still looking.

Metallic, most certainly. It's hard to describe and after looking it up I found it was a paint to sample of BMW Anthracite Grey (not Black). Here's a picture. It's got to be one of, if not the, most beautiful cars ever produced:

Off the top of my head, NA 150 hp, S 188 or 190 hp, S2 208 or 210 depending on market.

If they didn't take the time to remove the license plate bracket when they painted it, what else did they skip? "PORSCHE" under tail lights was painted over. Wrong muffler tip. Doubt the car came without a rear wiper. I deleted mine so I could get a track tire under the hatch easier. If the car has 115,000 miles, why do I see 22,815 in the picture. Side moldings are missing. the "16 ventilier" for the front fender is nice to have. Angle of front end picture doesn't let us see how the nose panels line up. Pictures suck. Aftermarket seats can mean a lot of different things. Were the originals beat to crap with 115k miles? No discussion of any maintenance, and while I wont pass judgment on the wheels being painted black, look at the left rear quarter picture. Is there any tread on that tire, or is it a bald track tire? Going in blind is not the way to go into a 944. I wouldn't go near this one without a PPI and Carfax. I could see this car needing just a freshen up which means spending over $1,000 for Koni shocks, $800 for belts and H2O, $2,500 for a clutch, $750 for brake pads & rotors, now lets tune it up, plugs are cheap, wires are not. This assumes everything else, like the compression in the motor is in good shape.

I'm out touch with prices. Someone correct me on what I put down. I am including an indy shop doing the work and think I am low.

What are the mayjor CONS in getting a car that has seen the track, say with Recaro racing seats, etc this is a 86 T in the PCA qualified ads. ? it has maint records asking 8k spares etc.
Enjoy the game !! thanks Tom

Nothing wrong with a car that was tracked. Just know what you are getting into. A tracked car requires more maintenance than the car granny drove to church.

Trying to watch some of the game while researching FATCA requirements.
