Are you buying it for the track or to run around town? Turbo lag took the life/enjoyment out of my 89 951 when I was driving it to and from the station.
If you want a NA, send this guy a private message. He asked the question, then disappeared, but the car looks right, and is probably worth a premium if you are buying a car to just enjoy without maintenance issues.

In that case, you want an S2 It has the low end torque for road course driving with no turbo lag. For the track, some people like the 951, there's good aftermarket support and you can get bags of power out of it with the right tune. The NA 944s are a little slow for off track, I think you'll be happier with the 3.0L S2, It snaps my head back, no complaints and no turbo. Even in basic road trim, the S2 is as much fun as my '85 928, and that's a truly awesome car.
PS: Also, IMSA 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the Firestone Firehawk Series during the 90's. They had to change the rules for the S2 just to keep the rest of the field (the nose pickers at the back of the pack) competitive. It has such great gas mileage it didn't need to pit often enough so they made Porsche fill half the tank with ping pong *****...

Thanks Otto, that gives me an idea of what I should be looking for. There are some good deals on the non "s" models. What about an non S with a perf. chip?

The 944S2 is a great choice, not only do you get more torque and horsepower, but the Brembo brakes and great suspension out of the box. They also have the cleaner nose panel from the 944 Turbo. However, they are a little more difficult to find and typically demand a bit more money than the other 944NA's. If you find one, go for it!
If you have some cars local to you, go check them out....there is quite a bit of difference between the different models.
Early 944 NA 8 valve (83-85.1) - The interior is quite a bit more Nostalgic (Dated), but some people prefer that simplistic feel and look to the interior (the individual dial gauges/pods).
Late 944 NA 8 valve (85.2 - 89) - The interior has been updated, and still is fairly modern by today's standards. The last year 89 had a larger 2.7liter engine that has a bit more horsepower and torque.
If you prefer the look of Fuchs wheels then you will need to stick with something from 83-86, as the wheel offsets changed in 87+
These cars do wake up a bit with a chip, or MAF (mass air flow) conversion combined with advancing the cam timing by 4 degrees.
Because all the 924/944/968 cars share the same chassis, you can upgrade the NA cars with suspension parts from the Turbos/S2/968 for a relatively low cost.
You can have fun on the back roads with any of these cars. They are wonderful to drive, fairly fuel efficient, and although they don't have that much straight line speed by today's standards, there is still plenty of power to get you into trouble with the local authorities. Something to be said for driving a slow car fast!
Good luck with the search! Let us know what you find....

You are saying I would have more fun with a base 944? Than an S ? What about a Turbo ? Are the base more practical to own? I BS !!also find that DEALERS have no maint records , and they give this PRIVACY BS !! makes no sense to me and too much risk not knowing what has been done in the past. Right ?

Driving enjoyment and car preferences are a highly personal thing. So no, I am not saying YOU would enjoy a base over an S. I found the base 8V more enjoyable than the S I drove. If I spent most of my time in 3rd gear then I would probably enjoy the S more, it needs to rev. Porsche finally figured it out with the S2.
The records thing is important but that should be factored in the price paid. A 944 is a financially risky proposition if you cannot perform most of the maintenance and service. Fortunately a 944 (especially a N/A) is not a complicated car for a dyi'er. Unless you are buying a low to mid mileage turbo, S2 or 968 we are talking about a sub $10K spend on ~30 yr old car. Maintenance records or not you're gotta keep some powder dry for whatever may and will come up.

Buy an S2. You won't reget it.
Then, spend money to get all the maintenance up to date, records or not. It's going to cost you $2-4000.
You will then spend about $3-500 each year in ordinary maintenance (oil change, brakes, etc.), fun upgrades, and tires (because you will love to drive it so much).
Yes, you can buy a turbo, put money in it and go very, very, fast. You will never stop spending money on it.
Yes, you can buy a 944, or a 944S, it looks great, but no sum of money will make it go fast.
The S2 is your only option. Be happy that it is. Your will not want your first drive of ownership to end. Or any of the next ones.
BTW, the S2 is one of the best canyon carvers. You find that out quickly. And again. And again.
