968 pinion bearing repair - DIY?
Does anyone know exactly what's involved in replacing a bad pinion bearing in a 968 transaxle?
Is it beyond the scope of an advanced Do-It-Yourselfer? Someone who can pull a 944 engine and tear it down/rebuild it? And has a pretty advanced set of tools, plus a vise, pullers, feeler gauges, torque wrenches, and access to a press?
Or is there so much experience and transmission specific tools necessary that a shop has to do it?

I'd say no to DIY on the pinion repair. I have the factory service manual and it has an entire chapter devoted to this. The intimidating part is the list of tran$mi$$ion $pecific $pecial tool$ u$ed in the procedure.

THe whole centering of the pinion is based off of the race of this bearing and can not be done at home with out a press at least and the specified tools. pinion alone can be done if the bearing is reused. still need a good press and tools to get it apart. Plus the bearings cost is outragous funny ID size... not common.. The one for my NA was 750 cheapest I could find..
