Mine has broken into pieces and is no longer usable. I see there are still available for about $25. Is it really necessary and is there a less expensive alternative?

you mean the grey-black "carbon paper" or whatever it is thing?

i've not had one on my car for 12 years (broke the last one)...

it's just a dust cover, but the distributor has a gasket sealing it to the cam gear housing, and the 928 didn't use that part anyways.

Don't know if they are absolutely necessary, and I haven't had one on my car for a few years, but Paragon has them for $6.68. Part number 944.602.803.00.
