You could probably "rig" a wheel speed sensor on the rear axle.
mmm - 24% VAT on a used item? Seems like tax has already been paid on it at least one time.

I got ya! I would love to have the 6 speed myself I just dont see it until there is a proven way to make the speedo work. I have heard a few guys have figured something out but I have never seen it.

To complicate matters, my '88 has no ABS, and I dunno what the '88 speedo would do with an ABS signal anyway. It's expecting the signal from the teeth of the ring gear or whatever in the trans, not the little wheel in the hub for the ABS. So I could go with a 968 speedo, which probably means 968 cluster, which means different interface with the ECU harness, and we're officially at the "too much hassle" point. There's gotta be a way to install the sender in the 968 box - is there a place for it that just isn't machined out for the sender perhaps?

There's too much misinformation in this thread, Eirik is correct. I swapped a 951 tranny into my 968 because the 6 speed was about to break [pinion bearings]. There are 3 things required and perhaps less:
1. Tranny
2. Tranny linkage rod
3. Shift lever [the pin for the linkage rod is in a different location, only 1/2", on SOME 968's compared to 944/951, using the wrong shift lever will prevent shifts into 2nd, 4th, and reverse gear].
You do not need to change bell housings or torque tubes for tranny swaps. The only time you need to change to the 968 torque tube is if you use the 968 clutch housing because it's bigger and has a removable plate for MUCH EASIER clutch/flywheel replacements.
The only time you would have to switch the axle shafts for fitment purposes is if you get a strange 968 tranny. The Tiptronic units are asymetrical, and so are some of the early 6 speed cases. These require a Tiptronic style LONGER passenger side axle shaft. If you get a later symetrical 968 6 speed tranny then the standard axle shafts will work fine. You can probably even stretch out a normal axle shaft to fit ANY 968 tranny because they have the ability to reach farther than you might think.
Hope this helps.

My friend has a 968 trans in his track only 86 951. The trans bolts directly to the torque tube as many have already stated. He did swap out the shifter and shift tube, but it looked like you could run all the standard linkage (unless it causes binding). He also swapped out the axles and inner cv's to the 968 units. The 968 have different length axles and the inner splines were different than his 86 axles. This might not be the case with the later cars. I thought I also remeber that you could even use the standard axles, but I'm not certain about that.
