Default "Power Pulleys"

I used quotes for a reason...

Whom has put these on their car? How is the fit and finish? Any real world thoughts on how well they work? I'm not looking at them for the 4-5 hp they supposedly generate (I'd love to see that on a dyno), but rather to underdrive my alt on a pure track car.

Opinions?

First off, they don't "generate" any extra power. What they do is consume less of the available power due to less rotational mass. They can also be set up to underdrive various accessories and therefore consume less power as well. I'd say that 5hp is a bit optomistic, more like 3hp. If you go that route, post the results, we'd like to see them.

I would actually say that you can save more hp than 5hp, on my GTI vr6 there are dyno results thave have show aprox 9hp to the wheels added at some parts of the curve. I'm not saying we will have the same results, but it is possible.

But I too would like to see dyno results.....

Dave, yes, you are correct. They consume less of the available HP to look as if they actually "gain" HP. The net effect is the same, just wrong terminology on my part.

Ian, interesting... Since I am only trying to free up HP from one accy (no power steering), I'm not sure that would apply in my case.

Now the question: Does the coolness factor and meager HP "gains" equate to $200 for crank and alt pulleys?

That's entirely up to you. If you haven't done anything else, it's sorta like putting a diamond in and ashtray. BTW, have a source on the pulleys? I'd like to see them.

Broadfoot makes them and they anodize either blue or red IIRC.

I understand the reduction in rotational mass but find it hard to believe that would be much. The alternator can make nearly full rated output at idle in stock configuration - I've seen mine kicking out 115 amps at idle. It is the electrical load that determines how much power the alt will suck off, not rotation speed.

In situations where you want max power the A/C is going to be off and the clutch freewheeling, so nothing there.

That leaves the power steering. As I understand it there is a fluid diversion valve of some sort in the rack so when you are at speed the power steering pump isn't working much anyway.

That is about it. I'd be shocked if you got anywhere near 5 hp. I'd suspect temperatures on the dyno runs to be more of a factor to account for these numbers since they don't shoot enough air at the engine bay to replicate the car at any higher level of speed on the road/track.

Dave, Oh I've done plenty (with plenty more to come). 2.8L, ported head, bigger cam, TEC3, all crank mods, balance shaft delete, alum flywheel, alum press plate, solid clutch, wastegate, BOV, hard pipes, Milledge swirl pot, Aeroquip, coatings, bigger turbo to come. Contemplating SFR stage II headers and cross over.

This would be an icing on the cake type of thing...

I'd say if you were reducing rotational mass already, no balance shaft / light flywheel, might as well, only a couple hundred bucks

He had a set on sale a while back and I sprung for them. They are well made, fit well and are very pretty. Do they do anything for me other than make my race motor look nice, probably not but anodized machined aluminum parts look so much better than an old grungy steel stampings.

I put a set on because I got a good price on them and needed a new crank pulley. really not sure if they consume less power but they do look nice.
