Default S2 style oil cooler housing line adapter to AN10?

I'm wondering if anyone has converted an S2 style oil cooler line to accept AN fittings. Right now it has the press in ones with an o-ring I believe and a bolt to hold it tight. What is my best plan of attack to get this thing to accept the AN fittings? Cut the old line and put AN fittings there? Cut the metal fitting near the housing and put on an adapter there? Or is this fitting a common size that there is already a solution developed? Is this the same style as a BMW M3 like I have pictured below?

You could use a951 cooler plate instead, since you're already building hoses

I don't have the 951 cover anymore and the engine is in the car now, so changing it would be a huge pain in the ***. I already have the lines too as I'm going to reuse the oil cooler I had with the previous engine.

...howabout getting an AN weld bung (the kind meant ti fit into the end of tubing, with a little spigot on the end below the hex) or using a standard AN male-male adapter...

and lathe the spigot end to the same OD as the 944S2 hose ends where the o-ring secures.

then the new AN fitting would seal with the same o-ring as stock hose, and you could make a bridge bracket like in your BMW photo to retain the AN fittings with the stock center bolt.

I bought a cheap BMW adapter on eBay. I'm hoping that style of fitting is a standard German thing from that era and it will just fit... but if not, your idea of using a lathe to trim it down might be the way to go. I'll update the thread once I have more info.

I cut the crimp fittings off and had a local hose shop braze some steel AN-12 fittings on. They cut some of the barb ending off.

That looks really good. It's good to know there are some options for me.

oh yeah that's a good option too.
i did the same thing for my AC lines years ago (used original porsche ends but brazed JIC fittings on the other side of the fitting)

now if i ever need to replace a hose any shop can make me one

FYI JIC are exactly the same as AN, but made from steel instead of Alu and are 1/3 the price and available everywhere they use hydraulic eqpt.
being in Alberta I'm sure you have some of that there

Haha! yeah there is no shortage of hydraulic shops in this part of the country. That's great info about the JIC AN interchangeability; I didn't know that. I guess the only concern is the mismatch in metals, but it wouldn't be the first aluminium/steel thread combo in this car!

I'm trying to match up my SFR front mount oil cooler to the new 3.0L 16v engine and finding these little problems along the way of this project.

Justin,

I am VERY interested to find out whether the BMW fittings that you bought will work? I thought about this exact change , and would really like to implement this in my car, so I can replace the 20+ year old hoses. If you can talk about results , and assuming positive results, part numbers, this would be extremely helpful.

Thanks

Nathan

https://www.ebay.com/itm/152186864442

This is the one I bought. It's on a boat from China, so the arrival window is HUGE. I chose this one because both of the connectors can move with respect to the bolt in case those distances are different than the BMW. It's a cheap Chinese part, but $14 shipped seems like a cheap enough gamble.

I agree that this seems like a good gamble. Even if the diameter of the straight pipe is not right, as long as it is bigger than required, you can turn this down on a lathe. That, plus as you point out the spacing can change, seems like it should all be able to work.

I submitted a question on Ebay to the seller asking about the diameter on the straight end, and will post any response that I get. Do you happen to know the measurement for the pipes in the current setup?

I am excited that this can work, as I have been worried about the failure of my old hoses, and the possibility of not catching the problem before serious engine damage.

Default Oil cooler radiator and lines

I just used the 951 side plate and screwed in the appropriate aeroquip adapters. My aeroquip guy welded in bungs on the S2 cooler and I ‘m using Aeroquip blue hose in between. The blue hose has push on connectors so I can cut the to proper length when I go to install the cooler in the gravel gobbler up front.

The Chinese adapter fittings don't work for the S2 or 968 factory cooler ports. The OD of the fittings is too small. The retaining plate would work and the provided bolt works but the fittings don't.

I plan to make fittings that will fit.

Dimi,

When you say that you plan to make fittings that will work in this application, do you mean that you plan to make AN adapters with the right OD on the other end and sell them? If this is the case, let me line up to be your first customer, as I have wanted to replace the oil cooler lines on my 968 with aftermarket hoses and fittings ever since I bought the car.

Nathan
