Could anyone comment on a Volkswagon TDI vehicle such as a Jetta or Passat?
From reading at www.tdiclub.com about torque and suspension upgrades, it looks like these might make good cars for when the 944 is too small but you want something that feels similar. The diesels seems to have great torque as well as fuel economy.

I don't think they put a TDI in the Passat yet. Read a couple weeks ago that VW is developing a V10 diesel for the Passat though.
We are looking to pick up either a Golf or Jetta TDI this spring. It's the only way to go in my opinion if your buying a VW grocery getter.

I have had a TDI Jetta for 2 years now - 122,000 KM no major problems. Had to replace the timing belt at 90,000 KM. Even starts well in -20 C weather YES that is minus 20 C.

a friend of mine just bought a corrado that the previous owner swapped in a tdi. i recently had a chance to follow him on the highway. i was driving a 2000 golf 1.8t, he was in the tdi corrado. i couldn't keep up with him! its definately fast in a lighter car! the corrado probably weighs around 2500-2800 lbs. and the tdi was mostly stock, i think it only had an exhaust and intake. plus it gets awesome fuel mileage. he's also planning on putting a tdi in an early scirocco, now that'd be fast!

That's not correct. Passat have had TDI for years (at least in europe).
Here in Finland you are able to buy Passat with two different TDI engine either 100hp or 130hp formats

Hi Bryan,
My wifes car is a Golf GT TDi 115 bhp with a tiptronic gearbox.
I used to have the same engine and gearbox in a passat highline break, and I also had the V6 2.5 TDI with 150bhp in a passat .
Great cars fantastic performance, but I would advise some suspension mods for a standard car.
If you need any further help let me know.

I drove a TDI Jetta in 2000. Am I missing something?? That car only had two speeds Slow and Slower. There was no difference between full and half throttle. I mean it was a Turd.

We, Bryan and I, live in the US, not Europe. We don't get half of the options for automobiles that you all get. We only have the 1.9 TDI available, and only in the Jetta, Jetta wagon, Golf and New Beetle. In Europe on the other hand there are as many as 3 (?) diesel powerplants available. The Passat for the US market currently is not available with a diesel engine.

You can get a mid 90's Passat with a 1.9L TDI. (Generation before the current Passat.) These still fetch good dollars, though. You can get an "Upsolute" chip, which brings the hp/torque up to 150hp and 300ft-lbs!!

The original US market Passat (sort of), or rather the Quantum, was available as a diesel as well.

I don't know anything about the TDI's but I do know a little about diesels (check the sig). 7000+lbs empty, 18mpg, cheap fuel. I go 10,000 miles between oil changes and the thing will go 500,000 miles before needing a rebuild. Did I mention over 500 lb/ft. of torque at 1400 rpms. There have been incredible advancements in diesel technologies in the past few years most notably the direct injection which make them much easier to live with (cold starts used to be difficult). There are a few things to look out for such as the availability of diesel especially when travelling around the country, and you can get bad fuel which will ruin your day. All-in all I wouldn't trade my diesel for anything (except maybe a 996TT!!)

I had a 2002 Golf TDI for about a year. No problems, nice and quick around town, I loved it. Incredible mileage, cheap fuel, almost no maintainence, and good performance, I'd buy one again.
