Question Cold weather steering problems

Now that its cold out I have a problem with my steering when I first get in the car. If I back out of a parking space, when the car is cold, and turn the steering wheel all the way to one side the car makes a jolting motion like I hit another car. I have to back off of the full wheel turn or it will continue to do this. The car also makes a loud sound like I hit another car. When I start going forward, still in the parking lot, the power steering quits for a moment here and there until I get out onto the road.

Any idea what is happening?

Thanks,

Mickey

That's funny, mine seems to steer easier since the colder weather hit. Maybe the fluid makes a difference.

Mine does the EXACT same thing!!! I try to do it forward but the car was warmer and it doesn't do it. I to want to know what is wrong with my car. I don't really know what to look for if the ball joint is dry or what ever but would like to know why it is. Thanks for bring this up, I was JUST about to ask someone the same thing.

So what does that mean really? Does something need get tighten up? Rebuilt? Replaced? What kind of job is it, how hard? Better yet, how much is it going to cost?

Question

Ya, I have the same problem. And have had lots of time to learn about it because it's getting cold up here in Canada. I found it was the power stirring pump, check your res. for bubbles you could be taking in air some where. I found that if the car sits for longer then a few hours (4-8) then i get that sounds. If i check the Fluid, theres bubbles and i am down a bit. (yes i have many problems with me car ) After the car has warmed up for a while i find that the sound dies down, and the stiff wheel goes away.
If you could check your res. to see if your having the same issue that would be interesting to find out. But than again i have no mechanical thumb.

I got this answer at Roadfly.org and it sounds right. Just wanted to share the info.

"When the power steering belt is not tight, and cold, it will 'slip'. When this happens, the pump will momentarily stop turning, and then when the belt 'grabs' it would cause the 'jolting' motion and noise.

As the belt 'warms' up, it grips better, and this problem goes away. Replacing and re-tensioning the belt is easy and inexpensive.

As mentioned, also check the power steering fluid level. Low fluid level would cause the same symptoms, but it would not go away as the car warms up.

good luck
JM"

The resivoir has a built in filter if I remember correctly.. It may be clogged to the point cold fluid will not filter in till warm.. You have to replace the entire resivoir to replace the filter,,, I am not totally sure on this. been a while since I saw a thread on this. maybe some one else that has done this can chime in.. the resivoir is like 15 - 20 dollars if I remember correctly..
