Default My first Porsche - A '79 924

Hello everyone!

So, I bought my first Porsche ever today... I was recently in the market for a nice Fall/Winter project and came across this beautiful rust-free 1979 Porsche 924 with only 85k miles on it last week and when I took a look at it, I knew it was the right car.

A couple years ago I was looking at getting a 944, but couldn't find the right one and really just wanted to have a fun weekend car. Well, my craze for the 944 ended when I found something else and I really never looked at getting a Porsche until the past week when I fell back into a Porsche craze again haha.

To be completely honest, I really don't know a whole lot about these cars, besides the fact that they have a VW/Audi engine in them and were made before the 944. I did some research on them, but I really can't find a whole lot of information about a 1979 Porsche 924, so that's why I am here.

So, my 924 has the 2.0L VW/Audi engine which is currently half-running right now. The car starts up and runs for about 2 seconds and then dies- I am thinking it is a fuel pump, but I have not checked for sure yet.

Anyone who knows a good bit about 924's please let me know about what to watch out for, general maintenance tips, more specifications, etc.

Any advice is much appreciated! I am very excited for this car and I hope to learn a lot from this forum.

Nice car, you can start by sourcing a pair of original mirrors, those are not its mirrors.
Then source its original radio and heater control *****.

As advice, replace front bushings immediately and take it for a proper 4 wheel alignment before you expect any driving experience out of it.
Another piece of advice, don't expect it to be anywhere near fast as its an US detuned model so that car is all about momentum driving balance and precision if you refresh the suspension.

It has the engine block almost identical to some VW van and some Audis but whats inside the block, on top of it and around it is Porsche designed stuff. So its a very big stretch to say it has a VW/Audi engine.
That being said, it uses quite a few common parts with some VW/Audi engines which means its robust and cheap to maintain.

You may want to join 924board.org and porsche924.co.uk
Good luck.

Actually, if it's a 79 model, that mirror type may have been optional or standard, depending on the trim level, although I suspect they may have been added on since the chassis is the early version with 4 lug wheels.

The "flag" mirrors were standard on the '80 models.

My first Porsche was a white 1979 924. It was a fun car. It's been a long time since I had that.

Best of luck with your project! I hope it is a good one. If you can, my advice is to drive the snot out of it for a season before you spend a lot of money on it. If it's a good car & you like it, then go nuts!

One of the best upgrades for this car can be a smaller 320mm (+) Momo or Sparco type wheel. This really quickens the reaction if it is manual steering.

Drive it lots and enjoy! Don't consume yourself with the details or making every little thing perfect or "correct." You'll go both crazy and broke.
