I have a box right on the passenger side fender well with a cable coming out of it and going into the firewall. On my car it makes all kinds of cool sparking noises and I'm sure it's not good. There is a plaque on the firewall right next to it. It isn't a vital part of the engine, but it would be nice to know what it is.

Not sure about the layout of the earlier cars but on my 86 there are 3 things on the passenger side fender. Rule out the windshield washer system and you're down to the cruise control actuator (mine's been removed, but it WAS there)this is a funky metal box with an arm off the top that connects to a cable (push/pull), that operates the throttle. It's located at the rear of the fender near the firewall. The only other thing is the ignition coil, it's a cylinder not a box, this could make "all kinds of cool sparking noises" if it were arcing, but it doesn't have any cables through the firewall.

SO THATS WHY THAT STUPID POS HASN'T BEEN WORKING!!!

I just changed the headlights to HID last night, and noticed it was making noises when the ignition was on, but never heard it before because the enngine and exhaust are sort of loud.
