Default Headlight Question

Okay, I just chaanged the headlights out with an HID kit (one of the no-re-wiring type kits) and it was easy, but I have a question. There is a second bulb in the fixture to the side of the H4. It's a smaller bulb and has 2 wires hanging out of it. What is this for?

I have high beams and regular headlights without this.

Sounds like whats called a "city light" in europe.
Kind of a low power light.

I had one of that came with my H4 lens -- ripped it out since it's useless to have that light when the headlight is retracted.

It would save on the underbody lighting effects!

Yeah, under body lighting is about all it is good for if it is a city light on a 944.

Sorry you went with that kludged HID in a filament designed lens but that bulb may supposed to be the high beam kicker. Look for wattage stamped on the base. If you are 10 or under it is a city light. If it is 60 or over it is a high beam.

it's a 55/65 H4, I checked that.

Sorry Iceshark, I can't afford too much more, and for $30 off Ebay I got this kit. Yours may be coming in the future though!

Is it a real HID (high intensity discharge) light with ballast and high voltage or just a halogen immitation?

Thanks.

On the European version 944s, there's a combination high beam and city light in the front bumper on each side. So the city light wiring comes out of a different plug. When you put the headlight switch to position one or two, the lights in the bumper glow. And their high beams come on with the high beams in the main headlights.

However, other cars use that 7" round H4 light - BMWs come to mind. And they have a city light in the 7" round headlight. Maybe this kit covers other European cars?

On my car i had the same setup and i just never hooked the other light up because i couldn't figure out what is was for. The headlights help me see at night alot better though compare to my other ones.

Ryan, This is sort of confusing if you have a stock H4 attached with nowhere to go. What exactly did you buy off EBay?

Hey RMills,
I actually have a similar light set from the sounds of it. I have the superwhite headlights, mine came with blue "driving lights". You must understand these kits are mass produced by the thousands, and meant to be sold anywhere in the world. In Europe, you don't actually have to have your headlights on during the day and at dusk, you can have driving lights, which instead of projecting the light forward to illuminate the area in front of you, they merely illuminate the headlight chamber and serve the same purpose as the sidemarkers on your car; to define to other drivers the boundaries of the vehicle.
The company made it sound like this was a super cool feature, when really it serves no purpose to us because 1)We don't use driving lights in North America, the headlights on newer vehicles just stay on during the day at a very low beam and 2)We only have our headlights flipped up when it's dark; personally, and I think most would agree, that the 944 looks FAR better when the headlights are down.
This kit suits other cars with 7" headlights better, like a jeep for example; you could wire the driving lights if you wanted. Plus, the kit is far easier to install if you leave out the driving lights. Besides, blue light bulbs in the headlights are illegal
What I did was just snip the wires on the back and plug the driving light hole with the bulb holder. Barely noticeable, only if you choose to blind yourself trying to find them at night...but eventually I'll find an even better solution
Now there's a long post...

I bought exactly what Friendan said it was. It's a HID light, just one that didn't require any wiring changes. I ended up not hooking up the little "city light" bulb

If it doesn't require any wiring changes... how can it be a HID light?
