Default car wont start, please help

hey guys, i just bought an 83 944, with 56...miles, the car is in perfevt condition in and out. the woman who sold it to me, said that the car did not start in a year. so i have benn trying to start it with no results.
i bought a new battery, chekked all the fuses, but nothing is happening. when i turn the key, everything inside the car works, but when i try to start it, i hear a little click, and thats it. iam not sure if it is an electrical, or mechanical problem, but i would like any advice before i decide to get screwd by some mechanic.
i will apreciate all the help i can get.
remember, this is my first porsche and i have no clue
thanks guys

Does the engine turn over? Or is it just making that little "click" noise like when you have no (or a lack of) power to the starter?

Hmmm i'd grab a meter and start carefully checking things, possibly a bad starter?

If the battery is full, the relay is clicking but the starter is not turning, the starter is probably broken.

The starter itself is expensive, to have it replaced is an easy task and shouldn't cost much.

Good luck

Starter isn't that bad. $150?

Could also be grounds.

Do this. With a good battery. Run a jumper cable from the negative terminal to a good clean spot on the engine. See if that helps.

If that doesn't work.

Then pull the starter and see what it does out of the car (Ground the starter casing with your handy jumper cables, leave the positive wires from the car on, and do not touch energized positive cables to the solenoid, or even the grounded ones for that matter)

See if the starter spins out of the car.

Absolute worse case scenario is the engine is siezed. But from her description hopefully not.

Where are you located. Maybe another Rennlister could pop over and lend a hand.

Lay on your back in front of the car and slide straight back. It is just behind the back of the front wheels, right in the center of the car on the rear of the engine. Can't miss it if you crawl under there and look up

Buying a Porsche without starting it, it must have been dirt cheap. Sure hope it was, anyway!

This should be very interesting thread. Place your bets, gents...

Was that 56 miles or 156,000 miles?

You scare me: " i have no idea where the starter is, i looked around, but iam not sure where it is"

Is this your first car?

mike 99l,
There are quite a few of us in th south Fl area, Where in Miami are you? If this is your first expirence with a 944 there is alot to learn about the care and feeding of these beast's. Nothing too difficult but they are getting old and are a little high strung. Still the most fun you can have with your clothes on tho. Let us know how things are going and if we can be of any help.
Good luck and enjoy the ride,
Bill

make sure the engine is not siezed, take out the spark plugs, put the car in gear and push it. Make sure it turns over, also make sure there isn't a cyl. full of liquid, either water of gas. For your sake I hope it is just a bad starter. Good luck.
