Finally found a place that has been working on Porsche for over 20 years. Going to take my car there and get it serviced. I called them yesterday and got some prices and the manager said they even offer a loaner car (Audi). Anyway, they charge 77/H and said that for a timing belt and waterpump/thermostat they charge 9H plus the parts. He said they would do the WP, TB, rollers and thermo for about 1400. As you guys know i have a small leak of collant and i think its the WP but the guy said he would check it out and make sure it was not just a loose hose. Reason i dont do it is because i dont have any time. Anyway it feels good to finally find a place that has a good reputation for working on german cars. And i can atleast have some documentation for changing the WP and the TB for when i sell it. A friend of mine has a 86 928 S4 and a 89 928 GT and gets all the work done there(he bought them new) and has been very happy with the place. I have not got the fiber werks bumper put on yet and have not got the new paintjob. Im hopefully going to get it over to the guy some time next week and i will post pics of the process and the outcome. Thanks for reading my jibber jabber.

Have you checked out Rennbay's state-by-state list of mechanics? A pretty useful tool (especially for travelling PPIs). But if your guy isn't on that list, submit it and add to the list.

Indeed sounds like a good place but is that $1400 with parts is kinda steep on the parts prices???
There is a great shop in my area that works on Pcar/ferraris and all European vehicles. I got a quote of $500 for exact same job without parts so thats a $200 lower price but anyways, they suggested that i buy my own parts from discount Porsche places and the total is much more like $1000. I decided to do the job by myself this spring.
Did you ask them about buying your own parts??? 944online sells this huge kit that can cover all that job and i think it's around $450-480.

ok i just went to rennbay and called another place and its a little shop with 2 guys working there and he said they would charge me 700 for the same job. It sounds great, actually it sounds AWSOME but i have to have it worked on by a small place and if something goes wrong im sure they could just tell me to go screw myself and i wouldnt have anything to show for it. The otherplace that charges 1400 is a very high reputation place and work on a lot of german cars and i know just by the service i got on the phone that they would "baby" my car. I want to spend 700 but i also want to get a good job done so im most likely going to spend 1400, what would you guys do?

Is that $700 with or without parts???And is $1400 with or without parts???
the weird part is they are all humans and they can make a mistake, it's all about WARRANTY! How do both shops guarantee their work?? how many years/month???

both are with parts. And i dont know of the warranty but i am more then sure your going to get the best warranty for the place that does it for 1400 because like i said, Very high reputation place. But ill check just to be sure.

wow... that is some price difference.... the perfect price for this job is actually $1000 WITH parts. paying $400 for just reputation is a bit steep. If those guys quoted you at $77H and 9H of labor i say you just get the part by YOURSELF and pay $700 for labor at a reputable shop. THEY OVERPRICE the parts by $200, get them by yourself.

Higher price does not mean better warranty. It can but often times doesnt. It usually just means you are paying for reputation.

It is about the same amount quoted to me by Stuttgart AutoHaus in Dallas. The dealer wanted less money. BTW - dealer service is not that bad as far as price on certain items.

ok called 2 main porsche dealers and one was 1480 and the other was 1450. I think im just going to go with the 1400 because the one that does it for 700 they are a little garage with 2 guys and you never know what your going to get. Even if they offer a warranty they dont NEED to hold their word because they are only a very very small tec center vs the high reputation place.

While not questioning your decision why not take it to the dealer if you are only going to save 50-80 dollars? At the dealer you KNOW you are getting Porsche parts, and you have to believe that they have some clue how to do the job.

In the other hand this two man shop has a much lower overhead compared to dealers. IMHO the price is too big to pass it off just like that. Ask them a few more questions. Have they done this job on a 944 before? Do they have at least 3 referrences you can check with? Ask them to itemize line by line what exactly they are giving you for $700 on paper. Times are hard, prices are dropping everywhere except with dealer's labor. However if money is no object to you then disregard this advice.
