Well I finally switched to XP and decided to get the pro version. Well all the fixes I have seen to get NFS working on XP seemed to be fixes for the home version ( change compatibility mode to win98 or rename gimme.dll ). Absolutely none of that worked for me and I discovered that XP pro runs on the NTFS file system and that changes the whole story when it comes to workarounds. I finally found a fix that worked on my machine and I dont even have to run in compatibility mode or change any files. Here is a link to the page, look at #3 towards the bottom. I dont know who wrote the patch, so use it only if you dont mind risking using unknown software.

Can you play online after applying the patch?

 

NFS works on my pc, set up as fat 32, maybe this will fix my laptop and NFS issue.

XP should play it just fine, not sure why you'd be having any problems.
But I guess I'll find out in a bit.

The problems I was having were when I first installed it, the thing kept saying that it found directX 0 and it needed directX 7. I had directX9 in the machine already so I reinstalled the game and let it install its own directX7, still the same message. When I put it in compatibility for win98 mode it would throw a strange error and die right after that initial startup screen with the porsche. Then somehow I got past that error by turning compatability off and fiddling around and it would start up to the point where you choose your username and die by just completely shutting the game off, no error message or anything. So after the patch it all works and without compatability mode which some information was saying that using compatibility slows the game down a bit. Have not tried to play online yet, I need to remember my passwords from the other computer...

 

I know EA has their own version of video drivers located on the retail cd. Look for them matching you video card and see what happens when u install it.

 

You can try a DirectX remover to clean your DirectX, and then do a fresh
install of DX9
