Default Coolant Leak, Runnin Hot

86 951 - Just went to a football game in the 951 and noticed on the way it was running a little hot. Got there parked, and turned around as I was walking away and noticed that some steam was coming from under the hood. I smelt it and it was burning coolant smell. Popped hood, coolant low. Look under car. !@#%&*, coolant dripping from belly pan. Call dad, get some water, re-fill, drive home carefully watching guage. Upon further inspection in the garage, We noticed a pudle of coolant by spark plug #2, in the region of the water temp sender. I don't think water temp sender is leaking, but I;m not positive on that.

So, what kinda hoses run up there under the intake manifold that could leak coolant.

Not blowing smoke out the tailpipe so headgasket should not be the problem. Suspected leaking water pump, but as the coolant is up on top of the block, that wouldn;t really make sense.

Any thoughts?

Thanks
Mike

There are two temp sensors, one for the DME and one for the guage. Did you check both? The one for the DME has a fuel injector type fitting while the one for the guage has a simpler wire connection. The headgasket might have failed on the side while leaving the cylinders intact. Hopefully the headgasket is fine and there is a loose sensor or something.

So the only 2 things that are up there that have coolant flowing through/by them are those two sensors? I gotta check both those again, didn't really look too much. The only thing about the headgasket failing is that 1.the car is coming off the road for the winter next week 2.the timing belt has to be done before I drive the car again in the spring , so at least if I have to do a headgasket i;ll already have all that apart.

Anything else under that manifold?

Mike:

There are at least three potential hose culprits.

1. The hose near the front fitting on the cylinder head is prone to leaking. It is a short section between the aluminum housing with the air bleed screw and the steel tube running towards the top radiator inlet. You will have to remove the Air Flow Meter to see it completely. Make sure the hose clamps are oriented so that they do not interfere with the AFM during reassembly.

2. One of the hoses on the turbo. It can spray and leave a puddle as well.

3. The heater hose at the rear of the cylinder head. This is the least likely of the three.

Happy hunting.

OK, thanks, I'll scope it out.

It's probably a hose bro. I had the samething happen to me. Temp guage was in danger, shut car off, I came out of the car and it seem liked an explosion happened under the hood. The main hose blew! Steam and coolant all over. But I'm thinking its a little split or crack in your hoses. That will cause the temp to rise, and slowly the split will open until it blows.

Yea, I hope its just a hose. The thin is though that there is a puddle ner # 2 spark plug, which is on the top of the block. There isn;t a mess anywhere under the hood like coolant was sprayed all over, so I;m wondering how that coolant got there from a hose.
