Question Tool Conundrum...

This was supposed to be a post about how excited I am about having a
new tool set. I kick ***, black chrome Mac tools set my father bought me
as a thank you for all the work I've been doing around the house for him.
This being jobless crap sucks, but my father is happy that I'm spending
more time with the family that I used to not see much, and getting things
done around the house that he's getting too old to do himself.

Anywho, this is what I thought I was getting:

https://mactools.com/ProductDetails....emNum=JJ-ADSET

I was at SAM's Club and I saw what appeared to be this exact same
set as what I saw on Mac's web page while I've been shopping for a
Torque Wrench, so that I might work on my 924S. My dad who was
looking over my shoulder simply said "Hey, lets get it!"

What I would up getting is close, but not quite:

http://www.samsclub.com/eclub/main_s...cfkjdgoodfkh.0

The differences are mostly cosmetic. There is no chopper photo on the lid
of this tool box. The tool box is the same except for no laser etching on
the handles. Hell, it even has the same gas struts that scared the crap out
of me when I unlocked the lid and it lifted itself up!?!?

The two big differences, that really kill me, and is the debate in this box,
is that one, the Combination Wrenches are *NOT* ratcheting. I LOVE
ratchting wrenches, and they are 90% of the reason I picked this tool
kit over any other. This kit just has normal black chrome plated tools.

The second reason...well, the Warranty for doesn't say MAC TOOLS, it
says.....Stanley.

No kidding, the same Stanly that I've purchased a tape measure from
that lasted about a week of regular use.

Honestly though, looking at the super large photo, I can't tell the difference
between this Stanly tool set, and the Mac tool set I see online.

Does anyone know if Stanley is a subsidiary of Mac Tools?

Oh yeah, one other thing that bugs me about this setup. The Stanley tool
set is 207 pieces, and the Mac tool set is 210. I've not exactly figured out
the 3 piece difference yet, but I think it's more of a shifting of the lineup
rather then a simple 3 piece difference. This set only goes up to 23MM
and the MAC set goes up to 32MM on the metric side.

So I'm debating, should I return the tool set and give my dad back the
$425 we paid for it, tax and all? Or should I just keep it and deal with
a slightly above average tool set? It's a real heartbreaker for me not to
have ratcheting combo wrenches. They are such a time saver!!

Any and all thoughts are welcome. (sigh)

Raven,

Mac Tools is a subsidiary of Stanley Works.

You are correct about the differences in the Sam's/ Mac kits, Additionally, the Sam's kits are made in China and Mac's in Taiwan. The Mac box is also higher quality with more detail. There may also be a difference in warranty, 1 yr at Sam's vs. lifetime from the Mac distributor. I would like to verify that for you.

I am a Mac Tools distributor and I will not sell that kit on my truck, as I don't believe that is the professional quality my customers demand.
It is a fantastic buy for the home/ hobby mechanic.

Let me know if you would like me to get the final word on the potential warranty issues.

The Sam's one is made in Taiwan. And the Mac tools are made in U.S.A. that's a big difference. If it were me, i would return them and get Mac tools, you are not going to get the same amount of tools for that price, but they will last a lifetime. If that doesn't work out, look at Craftsman hand tools, their hand tools are made in the U.S.A. and it's what i've been using, i wouldn't trust anything other than their hand tools though, the other tools are made elsewhere and don't carry the same warranty. just my .2c

I work at a Sam's club and while doing some re-shops saw that kit on display. I was tempted to buy it for the price, but realized i am broke as is. Ive been using a 36 peice Allied tool kit i bought from AutoBarn for $30.00 for any repairs that need to be done while at school as of late. The only thing keeping me from buying a set of tools on my own is my fathers promise to buy me a full set of Snap-On when i graduate sophmore year college.
