Basic Questions on Center Caps
I recently purchased a set of 17" Cup I wheel for my 968. I now want to purchase a matching set of center caps for these wheels. Before deciding on which styles to buy, I first want to understand the available options. A few questions for the group?
1) Is there one standard size for Porsche center caps, or more than one? In other words, can I pick only on aesthetics, or does size matter also?
2) Does anyone know of a list of Porsche center cap part numbers that will fit this particular wheel?
3) From what I have read, it sounds like some Porsche center cap part numbers that were originally made of metal are now made of plastic, any opinions on how good or bad the choice of metal vs plastic is in terms of quality and/or longevity?
4) Anyone have a set of four caps that they want to sell?
Thanks
Nathan

Hi Nathan,
I'll tell you what I do know on center caps.
The standard center cap on a 17" cup 1 wheel in 1992 was plastic and held in by tabs. The Porsche crest is NOT painted black. In 1993 the standard center cap had the crest painted black. There was an optional painted crest center cap, code XD4, and part of the exclusive program. These caps are metal and have a full metal ring that inserts into the rim. The crest is plated in gold and has the colors black and red added.

Nathan,
1) There is more than one standard size, but the wheels you are talking about will use the same fitment center cap as all the other modern Porsche wheels. So you can indeed pick on aesthetics.
2) Nope, there have been a lot of them.
3) Really this depends on which plastic ones and which metal ones you order. The OEM plastic holed up really well, the cheap knock off metal ones will lose emblems like they are going out of style.
4) Not the moment, but I'm sure lots of folks will. Suncoast porsche has them at some good prices if you decide to go new.
5) Jeff, you didn't even come close to answering a single one of his questions.

I belong to two other forums and I've can't believe the level of nastiness here.
This kind of stuff is a cancer and really needs to end Now!

Thanks for the feedback
Group,
A few more questions that will hopefully drive me in the right direction:
1) Some of the part numbers seem to have plastic tabs radially around the edge, that I assume click into a flange on the wheel? The metal ones that I have seen, seem to have outward bump on either side, that I assume fits into a slot, and twists to lock? Can someone confirm that this is the case?
2) Looking at the wheels, I can understand how the plastic tabs work, but not how the bumps work (or whether they would work at all on my wheels)?
3) Jeff mentioned option code XD4, does anyone know the exact part number that is used for this option code on a 94 968?
4) There are mentions in some of the postings for center caps for sale convex face vs concave face, any idea what is "normal" for a) car of this vintage, b) wheel of this vintage?
Jeff and Ian,
I appreciate the feedback from both of you.
Thanks
Nathan
