I am in the process of trying to fix my VDO analog clock with the help of a couple of posts from here and on Pelican, but another possibility is this:

Despite my pitiful soldering skills I was able to replace the capacitors that are usually the problem (90 cents) and the clock started silently ticking (!). It is now hooked up to a battery for an accuracy test.
