Default Who designed/produced 944 5Y gearbox?

I heard that 944 gearbox is similar to the one used in Audi 100. Who designed/produced these gearboxes? Was it Porsche or big gearbox manufacturer like ZF?

As far as I know the 80s 2.2L and 2.3L Audis had a very similar gearbox to the 944...so they probably made it...but the 924 has the same gearbox with shorter ratios and a smaller diameter input shaft...so that gearbox was designed and produced earlier.

Anyway the "same" gearbox was used for longitudinally mounted engines for VW and Audi until the 2000s. The gearbox on my 2000 Passat is 90% identical to the 944 one.
I actually developed(together with a buddy) a kit to fit 6-speed Passat gearboxes to the 944.

Do you think that Audi produced them or sb did it for Audi?

sorry for semi-off-topic.

Do you have pics of the kit you've developed? How do the gear ratios work with 944?

Right, lost my sense for a bit right there.
Audi and Porsche only specified the specifications and Getrag designed and built the gearbox for them. Car manufacturers are mainly assembly companies, they usually don't make any of the components...its all sub suppliers like Getrag, Fuchs, ATS and less known suppliers.
So to say its an "Audi box" or "Audi engine" is stupid(but we all do it to down the 924 and 944 I guess), its the same gearbox concept but its different for each application.

The kit consists of modified 944 gearbox output flanges(to fit the Passat gearbox and retain the 944 half-shafts)
modified early 944 gearbox mounts to mount the Passat gearbox, power shaft adapter from the 944 TT to the Passat gearbox input shaft, and ofcourse custom linkage to work with the Passat gearbox.

No pics. The Passat B5.5 TDI 6speed gearbox is pretty long in terms of ratios...so a modified 951S would use that.

how much for the "kit", assuming i can even find one of those gearboxes in the US?

or, would any other 6-speed B5/B5.5 box work, not just TDI?

Could we lego together a gearbox that has about the same ratios as the stock early euro 944 but with a really long 6th for cruising on the motorway? A nice addition would be a cheap LSD.
