This is an topic fraught with bias and variables, but want to see if I am in the ballpark. What would you pay for a 74 1.8L in good mechanical condition (converted to carb), no rust on the floor, trunks or battery, some rust bubbling at the lower front fenders, good interior, older (re)paint with nick and chips.

Sounds kinda like my car, but mine still has FI. And no rust bubbles in the lower body, just some very minor rust at the base of the B-pillars. Due to the ton of new/rebuilt parts (tires, rear Bilsteins & springs, rear calipers/rotors & pads, brake hoses & master cyl, trans seals, speedo drive, clutch cable, shifter & bushings, ign & FI parts, etc.) on this car, it will take $9K to buy it... see this thread for some of the story...

Going to have to see photos of the car you are looking at. But buy Pete's 914, it is ready to go for a long time.

Pete is way too invested in that car to sell it now.

Pete's car is too nice, this one is for the local spec series that we are putting on, so it will be gutted and caged. The upshot is that it already has the Webers required for the series.

Not the best pics

BTW, does anyone know what the radiator in the trunk does - is it an oil cooler?

I have to be honest - I think it's completely stupid that you guys are ruining good 914's for a race series. Do it with 944s, miatas, etc. and leave the good 914s out of it.

I don't disagree and I didn't pick the model - 944 would have been a good choice (I have a cab and it's well balanced), however; most of the 914s that are being used for the series are getting a new lease on life vs. rotting away in a field somewhere - so that is a positive thing. I had to pick a sightly "nicer" model because of time constraints so I'll try not to muck it up too much. In the end though, it's not like we are not hacking up 250 GTOs and it's for a good cause!

LOL! You fill the trunk with ice, throw in a bunch of Bud, Corona, and Coors, and you're set. The hard part is turning the car upside down to drain the water after the party - unless the trunk is rusty, then it'll drain nicely!

Asking was $4K - Got it for $3750 with the IDF 40 Webers - based on what I have seen, asking is $1-2K for a non-running rust bucket or $7-9K for a nicer car (too nice for the series). Few (decent) cars in between. The verdict on whether is is a good buy will be final when I see it in person, however; I think I did ok since I don't have to pay another $800 for new Webers which a required mod...and the annual premium was $52/yr for comprehensive and $0 deductible - wonder if that covers track damages
