Agree, I would rather but a 914 without a motor with a great body then a 914 with a great motor and a rusted body. Motors are cheap in the grand picture of things.

I just tried to see if I could upload pictures, it says I don't have that privilege. I guess I will have to find another way to share pictures. Maybe its time to get a photobucket account or something similar.

We looked at the car today. It looked like it was repainted in the mid 90s, there is some bondo in the lower body and some of the dog legs are rusted through. Under the battery tray there seems to be a decent amount of rust. Also the drivers side floor pan is very thin and the rear seat mount is rusted through. The actual "frame" looks to be solid though.
The engine seems to run well with some hesitation off idle and it burns oil. What really confused me was there was a milkshake-like sludge in the exhaust, which I wouldn't expect in an air-cooled car. I drove it and it went through the gears fine and had the power I would expect from such a small engine. The guy said he wants about $3500 which is more than I think it is worth. Pictures should be up tomorrow.

I would pass, just hear what you said is wrong with it I would pass. You can find a much better car for $5 or $6K. I know that might be more then you want to spend, but you will easily spend that (if not more) on that one.

Yeah, I plan on passing. The rust and other odd problems with this car really turned me off. The most concerning part was that the floor under the driver seat had rusted out, there were pinholes developing and the drivers seat had separated from the floor. As you can see in the pics there is a cushion behind the driver seat to keep it from sliding too far back. Also While test driving the gear shift **** came off in my friend's hand! The current owner admitted that absolutely nothing maintenance wise has been done to this car except a mechanical check a year ago, he didn't even bother replacing the 11 year old tires. Also the fact that he never put air filters on it was also concerning and could lead to future mechanical problems. The search goes on.

Tires, radio, seat belts, unknowns, rust...+ about for $4K (purchase, registration, taxes, etc.); e-gad.

Great pictures, the bubbles under the paint at the tail light tell a very clear story of that car's future.

But the aerodynamic w/wipers are cool!

This is very very very true. My 951 was an almost perfect body but motor was not what it should be after sitting for most of 10 years and almost all for 5.

When I went to my buddies body shop about some other cars I looked at I came away knowing that body shop hell is the worst ! And those were friend prices at that !!!

I keep scratching around for a 914 too. Oh well it took me over a year to get the right 951 so this might take some time too.

I still have some work to do on the 951 - I must be crazy !

Thanks for the email! I have also been looking around on craigslist and a little bit on ebay again. I found a car that sounds nice is advertised as rust free and is in Hudson valley NY. I am currently trying to arrange another visit.

Weird that someone felt the need to spray black paint all over the bottom of the car. Always makes me wonder what they thought needed hiding - you wouldn't think that the top side of those tie-rods would look that bad. Are those carpets "original?" To me they don't even look like proper re-makes. I wonder why the tops of the front shock towers are so rusty, makes me wonder if this car has covered 129,000 miles. A car that I'd love to do a PPI on, I might even find out why someone decided to paint the fan shroud, crankcase and transmission the most Mattel-colored silver this side of Manny, Moe & Jack's place. Hmmmmm...
