Looking for a Porsche 914
Looking for 914, any engine size but preferably 2.0 or 1.8. Little to no serious body rust/rot. I am on the east coast but would be willing to pay for shipping if it still makes sense given the price of any prospective cars. Please let me know if you have any ideas of where I could find a 914. My budget is in the under $5,000 range. I would appreciate any help I can get.

First, welcome to Rennlist!!!!!!
Under $5 is going to be hard for a good one with little or no rust. Esp. if it is a 2.0. Honestly, I would rather have a 1.7 then a 1.8. I have driven both and I personally like the 1.7. Good luck!

I'd tell dave-h about mine, but $5K won't touch the black 1.8. $8K might do it (based simply on the amount of new parts on the car), but...

hmm.. $5k, east coast, no rust... thats a trifecta that I'm not sure exists anymore
If I come across any, I'll try to x-post. Be sure to check the 914world and club sites for more active 914 FS postings.

Thanks all, I'm keeping an eye out too. However I just missed a black 1.8 repainted and mechanically restored for $4400. The guy removed his craigslist listing before I got a chance to call him. So as for the trifecta, I think its still possible, and I'm really flexible when it comes to engine displacement as well.
On a side note I'm 6 foot and I've never had the opportunity to sit in a 914, I've heard the seats are quiet low, does this allow for taller driver/passengers?

I've always had lots of room. In fact, with custom seats, at 6'0 tall, I had several inches (3-4) of headroom. A little snugger with the stock seats but never an issue. In fact, one of the things I liked about the 914 is the rather vertical windshield which offers a commanding view!

Great! That's one issue dealt with. Currently I have been contacting the seller of this 914: http://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/cto/2589215458.html
So far no reply. The car looks like it has vw wheels, or were these stock on entry models? Car sounds clean, I will hopefully be visiting it in the future!
Also another question, probably cause I'm new to this but I'm just kinda confused. The B pilar behind the driver is painted on this 914. Most 914's I've seen had a vinyl roof and side pieces. Was that an option?

Vinyl on sail panel (B pillar) was optional. Part of the "appearance" package for many years. The vinyl also does a great job of trapping moisture and accelerating rust underneath. Vinyl was usually associated with a car also having Chrome Bumpers
Most 2.0 cars have the vinyl. Others are more hit or miss about it being there (again, optional). Also given age of cars, some may have had it removed to , ahem, attend to rust issues. Big giveaway is if its still on the top of the b-pillar, under the roof

Well unless he wants a beater samurai or 80's jeep yj I'm not sure what you can get for $1800. But if this car checks out, i think the price is pretty good, I'm not expecting anything show quality, thats a bit out of my price range. Also assuming this 914 needs trans work. Which is better, rebuild or replace? I would probably try rebuilding before replacing anything. Ideas on where to get parts?
