To Light The Way...Or Not?
OK, guys, headlight dimmer relay, part number 111 941 583 A, has seemed to have disappeared from the planet. I have in my stock a 111 941 583, which I'm told will work.
But, here's the rub. The original "A" relay has four terminals, my other relay has five. Is the 5th terminal not used, or does it become a 12v trigger wire? If you've done this, and have high & low beams, I'd appreciate hearing from you! FYI; my car does not have driving/fog lamps.

I'd love to help, but electricity seems like magic to me! If it were me, I'd plug it in and hope the magic smoke doesn't come out of anything.

The 5th terminal is to activate the optional warp drive..

sorry...I'm in one of those moods today...
I just checked Huey's and it too has 5 terminals, but oddly there is no part number I could find on it anywhere. All 5 terminals are being used (so I guess I have the warp drive option and didn't even know it!)...
I agree with Matt: try it. If it works, then all is good. If it smokes...well....

Hmmmmm... Let's see, the left hand is holding a brown ground wire, the right hand is holding a switched 12V red/white wire...
Hell with it, I'm going to have a beer.
EDIT; The dimmer relay is located on the under-dash fuse box, mine (original?) is silver with the above number clearly printed on it.

Don't ask me electrical questions- was wiring a fog light flasher on the 914 something like 35 years ago, remember turning on the fog lights, they were REAL dim, something smelled funny, and smoke started filtering up through the dash!! Luckily, I can't smell it anymore...

I did a complete rewire of Papa Smurf, and plan to do a major rewire of Huey this winter. What year is your car? do you have the wiring diagrams?

Yep, mine is exactly that, and I know its the right relay - when you go from high to low, you can feel the 'click'...just no number printed on it. odd.... there IS a switch wiring diagram on it, plus some other numbers about 12V and such, but no part number.

The car is a '74, and, yes, I have the current flow charts. They show a 4-pin dimmer relay, of course, with no mention of a 5-pin. I just took my new 5-pin relay out of the box, and its terminals are 56a, 56b, 56c & S (same as the original), plus a terminal "30", which indicates 12V. The fuse box is only a few inches from the relay, so I think that I'll just power the relay with a new wire connected to, say, fuse #10 (which feeds terminal 30 on the headlight switch).
More later!

Gotta love those small victories!!! Below is a pic of the old relay (silver), the replacement relay (black), the new wire to activate terminal 30 (the 5th terminal) on the new relay. Voila! Headlights, high & low beams, bright and shiny! And, for grins & giggles, all rear lights working as well.

LOL! Those came with the car, probably one of the reasons that I bought the horrid little beast. I probably was thinking, "Hey, it's not too bad, it has Euro lenses." I'm not a fan of the reflector kit, but it looks better against black than other colors. I'll buy a trunk lock/latch set, when I find one at a good price, and put it in my 914 inventory for the day when I have the reflector removed.
