best brakes ever
Ok, so what is the best brake set up to put on a 914? Do they make a ceramic brake set up? is there a recomended brake kit? I want to build an AX and occasional trak car. I've been out of the 914 world for too long to remember any of the stuff I used to know.

OK, so the stock calipers are ok? just a rebuild? cross drilled rotors? stainless steel braided flex lines? Are there larger brakes available? What about putting larger 911 brakes on?

You need to mention some other details.. Like class rules? HP? Tire sizes? weight of car etc.
The stock 914 brakes can be quite effective... and yes, depending on your build, a '69-89 911 front suspension can be bolted on in place of the 914 parts..
I ran a stock 2.ol car with stock calipers/rotors and Porterfield R4S pads and ATE blue fluid and was quite impressed. I also ran a 2056cc motored 914 (120hp) with 911 brakes (3.2 carrera vintage) and it made a great track car - great balance, great wear.. easy to find replacement parts etc.
Depending on use for instance, at AX you would want to build a very light car and brake system.. whereas at the track, you might be more concerned about heat soak/management that AX wouldn't experience.
For 914 stuff, I would frequent 914world or even 914club as they are a very active group compared to the rennlist board. Not that there isn't cross posting or common users.. just saying...

thanks all for the input so far. I would be mostly doing AX, with the occasional DE. Mainly for fun, not fielding a serious effort. I was planning on putting a 911 motor in it. I know where there is a really good deal on a '74 2.7L. I wasn't going to put the car on the street. I thought about the 911 brakes because I can get them bigger than the stock 914 brakes. I'm still in the planning stage, so I was gonna do a lot of thinking first. That part is free.

As mentioned, the advantage of the 911 brakes is larger area and better heat soak abilities over the stock 914's NON vented rotors. Of note there are "early" and "late" 911 struts. Early struts have a 3" spacing between the caliper mounting bolts. Late struts have a 3.5" spacing. SC/3.2 Carrera brakes require the 3.5" spacing. Earlier models used the 3" spacing. I share this if you think this will impact your choice.. No point putting on a '71 911 front end if you plan to run SC brakes for instance
Is the 2.7 stock? (CIS) or modded? I must say (again) that I thought the 3.2 Carerra brakes were great. Slightly thicker rotors than the SC brakes.. Same pads though.. and built for a 2800lb/230hp 911. No reason they wouldn't be even better on a 2000lb/160-200hp 914.
Plus, the SC/Carerra brake parts are easily available.. and, if important, FIT under 15" wheels without issue.
Also recall that 914s have MANUAL brakes (no power boost). I imagine some of the super huge/popular stuff knowadays is built to use in conjunction with a power booster.

A really nice option if you are planning on sticking with the stock brakes in good shape with good pads is to contact PMB Performance in Sandy Utah. Eric Shea is a diehard 914 fan and owns a beautiful GT replica and a 911 Carrera replica as well. He doesn't just rebuild your calipers, he restores them. It doesn't add to the cost because that is just his process. He strips them down and replates them. I use Porterfield R4S pads. Others will swear by other pads... Tell Eric I sent you... (that will double your price! jk)

I haven't gone to look at the 2.7L yet, but it has CIS injection. I'd most likely convert to carbs. Naturally, a lot has to do with the cost. This applies to the brakes options too. I like the SC suspension option. I'd bet I could get a set of Fuchs for it. Tires? Perhaps 205's? I suppose I could build this thing progressively.

I have the late 911 suspension on both 914's (actually a full 935 set up on Papa Smurf, but...) - 3.5" spacing - and use 993 rear calipers on the front, 911 carrera rears on the rear. works GREAT. Love the feel. Hawk blue on the race car, stock Porsche/Mintex simple stuff on the street/ax car (Huey).

I've come to the conclusion that I'm gonna have to build it progressively. I'll prep the chassis first. I figure stiffen the body and add a roll bar. I'll start off AX'ing with the stock suspension, brakes w/ raybestos, and try to get some decent wheels and tires. Then I'll upgrade as I go and can afford.
I'd like to get some Fuchs for it unless y'all have some other suggestions.

x2 with the minilites.. plus you can buy a 6.5x15 (4 bolt or 5 bolt, depending if you stay stock or go 911 route) to squeeze in there. http://www.minilitewheels.com/
Rollbar makes a big difference. Still others like the "chassis stiffening kits" that are out there.
911 motors in a 914 can be a bit of work.. engine mounts, oil tanks, oil lines, oil cooler, beefing up suspension etc. It can make a good argument for a "strong 4" vs a 6.
