Default AC in 914

Sorry for dumb question but I couldn't find anything with a search. Did any of the 914's ever come with factory air conditioning? Or can it be added later? I had a 914 in college and am thinking about getting another one but it's so hot where I live it would be a 3 season car at best. Thanks

No factory air; dealer-installed AC was a common option. My car had it, but it was removed ages ago so I don't know how well it worked. But it was the '70s, so you can bet it didn't work very well. You can search for the various parts you need from the dealer-installed kit, but that will involve cutting of sheetmetal in the front trunk for the condensor and making holes in the firewall for the AC hoses. You can also try buying a modern aftermarket kit. Maybe less hassle would be to buy a nice 914. I see a fair number of 914s for sale in better condition that claim to still have functional AC.

FWIW, don't buy a 914 needing AC- it won't work that well, steals way too much power, and really screws up the car. Just drive it in nice weather and enjoy it the way it is... drove mine many a day back in the 70's with typical midwest high temps and humidity and just put up with it... of course, I was in my 20's back then! Sure enjoy AC now but not in a 914!

You're right- it won't be a daily driver so no AC. Evenings and 6-9 months of the year it will be just fine without AC. thanks

Glad you are passing on the AC. I hurts the performance a lot in these cars.
