I have a type IV, 2.4 liter that will bolt right in (should have an oil cooler installed up front but that's it). It makes almost 200 hp, very nice, very fast. However....it's in pieces right now. It's got a new crank, new case, new just about everything. We were ready to put it together, then we decided to go to a 6 cylinder, so it never got back together. It's right now with John Forbes at Black Forest Racing in Charlotte. He was sourcing heads for it - mine had a small crack in one. Comes with webers, Accusump, etc. I want $3000 for what's there now as-is. John said another 1500 or so to build and got the heads. Buidling it from scratch cost me about $10k when I did it originally.....

Porsche recommend putting a rigid roof or roll cage once you go over 200bhp. They beleive the body needs the extra strength.

The other point is that staying with a type 4 engine menas minimum modifications, lots of fun and easy to sell (if you ever want to).

If you want to go mad, Look for an old Alfasud engine (did they have those on that side of the pond?) and find one of the old adaptors to fit it to the VW gear box. The flat-four Alfasud `boxer' engine was conceived by former Porsche engineer Rudolf Hurska and has an excellent pedigree. This was a common swap as Alfas of that time dissolved in rain - leaving many good engines homeless.

I have never heard that about a roll cage above 200hp. I had one in my 914 that had 200HP, but I wonder if Matty knows this. He is close to 200hp!

Hi JAy,

I went and checked my papers - I'm getting closer to 50 than 40 and sometimes my memory is not as good as it should be....

One factory instruction I have found is that if you fit 8J x 15, 7J x 16 or 8J x 16 wheels to the back axle you should either weld in the 916 roof or weld in a roll cage to strengthen the body as these sizes wheels can cause major torsional loads in the car.

The other thing I seem to remember was in an official factory instruction about converting a 914/4 to a 914/6. This is where I think the power was referenced. I have it somewhere but it might take me a while to find it.... of course I could be mistaken and the figure was really 400 HP.

...watch this space....

Thanks! It makes sense to cage a 914 putting out a lot of HP. I was speaking with Matt last night and he said he hadn't gotten the track 914 he was going to cage his 914 that is street legal because he was getting nervous regarding doing 145MPH at Watkins Glen in a none caged 914.
