Default What engines can be dropped into a '71 914

I know with the right amount of $ anything can be done so please don't say "anything".

I might have the opportunity to pick up a non running 914 and if I do, I will not be keeping the 1.7L in there, but I don't want to spend a fortune on a 911 engine or a subaru swap. What other options do I have for a relatively inexpensive engine that will drop into the 914 with as few headaches as possible and have decent power?

Should I be looking for older VW 2.0s or ????

For the least amount of headaches, I would find another 914 engine. I have a 72 with a 1.7 and amazingly enough it is lots of fun even with such low h.p. A nice running 2.0 would be a blast. I have heard that 1.8's are less desirable than the 1.7/2.0. There are adapters for lots of different engines but any of them will present challenges in regards to $$ & fab work. If was going to go that route, I would use either an inline four from a m/c or a Vr6 from a vw.

Go Rotary power!! 13B turbo or twin turbo for the truely adventurous. Check out 'Kennedy Engineered Products' http://www.kennedyeng.com/ they have the answer to all your questions (no affiliation, I just had the same questions for my 912 :-)

You have come to the crux of the 914-4 dilemma.. Spend lots of money/time/effort converting to another engine (Buick V-6, V-8s; Subaru swaps, Audi 1.8Ts, Porsche 911 motors) but the most economical is a 914 2.0L. Don't expect more than 100hp without some serious $$ efforts.

My vote would be SUBARU! easiest solution around. Even better than a replacement typeIV in my opinion.

drop in the 2.0L motor. They are just fine, and for small amount of $$$ you can be up over 100HP if you convert it to a euro specs with a mild cam. Or you can go to town like Matt Romanowski and for $2K you can build a 180hp rocket out of a 2 liter.

I agree. I don't think people realize how much fun these cars can be even with a stock engine. Before I took my Dad's car apart to restore it, it was a blast. I have to say it was a toss up between driving it and my 951. Totally different experience, but the 914 is the most fun I've had with such a low power level. I'm getting close to being done with the car and will be very sorry to see it go. When my 951 was rear ended earlier this year I seriously considered replacing it with a teener. For a while now, my plans have been to build a tube chassis 914 w/ turbo hyabusa power but honestly I think a mild one with flat 4 power would be good fun without a lot of headaches.

Keep with a type IV engine- maybe a Subaru is fine but then you have to deal with water cooling, radiators, etc. Air-cooling is SIMPLE and effective just like Dr. Porsche planned.

I'm reasonably happy with the carb set up on my 914 but would be interested in people's experience with his aftermarket FI system...

Not the first or last to think that... Not much different than any other 911 engine is to install in a 914.. just heavier and more hp/tq
