Original Video Test of a 1.7 914 from 1969 in Germany
Here's another video I found which was produced in 1969 for the German TV channel ZDF.
The programme was produced by AUTOTEST.
I found this on the french website www.club914.fr
The car is compared against a Opel GT and Ford Capri
It's amazing how modern it looks compared with all the other cars on the road in the video.

I remember a friend and I "helped" out our local dealer back in '69 when they needed a euro model driven from the dealer in Minneapolis to Cedar Rapids Iowa. It was a dark blue colour and still had the euro markings, etc. A four but still a blast for a college kid!! Got lots of looks... brings back great memories, which I rekindle every time I drive mine now...

Great video! I love the filming techniques...
The 914 didn't look too water tight- all that water that came in after driving through the puddle....
I wonder what they use to film the car when it's moving so quick- a 911? Another 914 or other well handling car? The camera stays still and you can see the car leaning on each side of the suspension as they take it through the track bends...
Thanks for sharing-

Jay... When thinking about it, we have not really come that far from an engineering perspective in the last 30-40 years but we have moved forwards by several mile stones when it comes to aerodynamics and electronics.
In the 60's & 70's very few cars had power steering hence one of the reasons why wheel / tyre combinations were so skinny. Even today cars like the Lotus Elise have tires that resemble bike wheels but still rank at the top of the list of best handling cars.
Both the Porsche 914 like the early Lotus Elan’s of the 70’s are light weight and superbly balanced with a very low center of gravity.
By fitting monster wheel / tyre combinations on a light and small car significantly reduces the responsiveness of the cars and adds additional unwanted un-sprung weight also slowing acceleration and breaking.
Wide low-profile tyres do provide for great looks and are certainly required on heavier monster HP cars of today.

Its amazing to see the amount of tests they put the poor car through! Even in the fridge to test the cold start! Great video and thanks for posting it!
