Talking New 914 owner here!

Hey everyone, I just picked up a 914 from the tow yard across the way from our shop and was wondering if its some special model or anything. Its a 1974 2.0 liter. I'll post pictures of it for everyone tomorrow. I need a blank key for it because it was an abandoned vehicle along with a drivers side quarter glass window. We hotwired it earlier today and it ran, crappily due to the old gas but ran. That's about all I know about it.
It seems like an odd car compared to the 914's that ive seen before. Is there anyway I can check to see if it some special model? Is there an option code sticker somewhere like on a 944?

Unless it is a Limited Edition from '74 I don't know of any special ones. Gotta see some pics.

And the only thing special about the "special edition" was the god awful paint scheme!

It is the special edition '74! I'll take pics in a few hours and post them.
Is the only thing special about it is its paint?
Were they all fuel injected 2.0 liters in '74?
The only rust on the car is in the trunk too.

Looks liike a project. ... Not a special edition as they didn't have the vinyl sail panels, and were black with yellow stripes etc or another combo I forget right now but NOT silver. That has a fake aftermarket front 916 bumper- wheels were different on the spec edition as well, but many cars take on a different life after that many years and many owners- if you really want to you can get a cardex for the VIN and find out exactly what you have...

OK, the other Limited Edition car is white and orange. Also, that car was made in November of '74 and has a late model rear bumper on it (75 & 76) so I am guess it is a '75 model year. 914's are great cars once you work the bugs out of them. I would make sure the car is solid in the rockers and such before I started dumping money into it. Good luck!

It is a 75 model year. I would really check it out and make sure there is no rust. Why was it at the tow yard?

I agree with Matt (shocking). Really check for rust, in 914's if ther is rust in one place (like the trunk) there is more rust in another. Good luck and keep us posted on the outcome.

There is a little rust on the passenger side rear body panel and the battery tray and in the trunk. The floor pan underneath the carpet has no rust at all. We hotwired it yesterday and drove it a bit, man that thing can haul ***

Where is first gear located at? Reverse is where you think first would be, and second is right accross from it.
Is there a 914 haynes manual or the equivilant that I can buy?
It has a vacuum leak somewhere on top that im trying to find at the moment but other than that all it really needs is a tune up, plugs, wires, cap and rotor, etc...

Do the '75 914's have to be smogged?

It was in the tow yard because it was abandoned and never sold at the auction. And if I hadnt grabbed it, in a few days it would have been sent off to the wrecking yard

Ebay's your best bet for the Haynes Manual on the cheap

Nice car... I'm Just in the process of looking for one myself. Decided on a 2.0 it's just a case of finding the right one.

Your car would look better if you color coded the silles and rear bumper but a nice find all the same.

So what are your plans for it

Plans at the moment are to get it driveable and the rust repaired. After its registered im thinking of putting a carburetor setup on it. But that'll be after I pull the engine and reseal it and make sure its in top shape and reliable. Not sure on what else because I just started learning about them so im still searching for upgrades that I can do.
