Paint codes
Greetings to all!
I am a newish 914 owner, having bought a lovely little '76 914/4 this past June (I was forced to find a new car after my Rabbit GTI was totalled). I have previously owned a 356 and a 911 so I'm not new to Porsche, but this is my first 914. It's a wonderful car and I love it.
But I can't find the paint code listed anywhere and it's bugging me! The badge inside the driver's side door clearly reads L 98 B. I have looked at it time and time again to be sure I wasn't misreading it, and searched on the web several times for paint codes to no avail. There are many paint codes listed for the 914, but none of them are mine.
I'm quite sure the car has been repainted, but I believe it is a stock color as I've seen it on other Porsches. It's a light metallic green.
Can anyone offer any words of wisdom on this mysterious paint code?

Check out these sites:

<a href="http://homepage.mac.com/markd/914/colors.html" target="_blank">http://homepage.mac.com/markd/914/colors.html</a>
Hmmm,, that color number was recently talked about but I have lost the info sorry!
Check out the paint codes for VW's as they were the same (cars were built by Karmann)
Here it is! look at the paint chart. I have never heard of Lime Green Poly but maybe thats PPG name.

You have a mystery here. Brett Johnson's 914 book shows an L 98 P. but no L 98 B. L 98 P is is blue and a 1970 color, not 1976. Does your chassis serial #start out 476....? Check with a VW website or dealer and maybe decode it that way. good luck

What basic color is the car?
Mark DeBernardi also shows an Aubergine 914, which is purplish. Apparently a 914 buyer copuld get any color they wanted, on a paint to match basis. His is simply color code "98"
Check this out.

Well, all signs point to "metallic viper green," as far as I am able to determine.
I've got a couple of small chips on the passenger side door that I'd like to touch up, so I'll check with the local VW & Porsche dealerships and see what's available.
Thanks to all for the input! Cheers!

I would have to say that your car was originally "Lime Green Metallic". The L98B cooresponds to the colors codes that were being used at the Karmann plant at that time. You will see it here on the 76 color chart. (Poly=Metallic)
Although L98B is not listed at any of the usual places as a standard color, I'm not sure if your car was a special order. I've been working with the historians at Karmann on some other issues and we've come up with a few items that have otherwise been presented as fact. I would guess that when your chassis was completed, there was some L98B in the guns in the paint shop.
