Red face OIL TEMP

ANY IDEAS. HAVE A 73 WITH A 75 1.8/L L-JET MOTOR.
THE CAR WAS RUNNING GREAT UP TILL LAST SAT. THE OIL AND HEAD TEMPS STARTED TO SOAR. 300+ ON THE OIL AND MUCH HOTTER THAN USUAL ON THE HEADS. DROVE THE CAR HOME BIT STOPPED 3 TIMES TO LET IT COOL OFF. ONCE THE TEMP HIT ABOUT 220 DEGREES I WOULD PULL OVER. THE OUTSIDE TEMP WAS ABOUT 80 DEGREES. I DO NEED TO REPLACE THE OIL COOLER SEALS BECAUSE THEY LEAK. WAS WONDERING I THE OIL COOLER IS SHOT AND DO THEY FAIL ALL OF A SUDDEN? SHOULD I REPLACE THE COOLER AND INSTALL AN AUX. COOLER. ANY IDEAS

Adding an external oil cooler is definetly not too bad of an idea. You can mount it in the front after you remove those rubber plugs from the inside of the front trunk. My car also likes to be pretty tempered (ok bad pun) but so for no overheats. I got the needle to get up pretty close to the red when I was going up the hills right before LA with a fully loaded car going 4K rpm steady. The little oil cooler has a hard time keeping up that's for sure. Best of luck!

300 is way too hot for normal driving. I have seen temps that high on the track with prepared race cars (formula 2000 and rotaries) but these will only hold up with synthetics for limited periods. My 911 saw 280 at Daytona on a 80 deg day but the cooler was too small, since fixed;-). You have a serious issue that needs to be addressed asap, then install an external cooler, with thermostat, to ensure correct temps of no more than 200 in normal driving on a warm day. Check your air flaps/thermostat, obstruction on the cooler (maybe something got through the fan), oil pressure OK?

OIL PRESSURE SEEMS OK 50-60 PSI WHEN COLD 20-30 PSI AT NORMAL OPERATING TEMP (220-230)

REPLACED OIL COOLER SEALS (NOT DIFFICULT JUST FRUSTRATING AND TIME CONSUMING)AND PUT IN AN AUX COOLER AND A FAN. HIGHEST TEMP HIT ON A 100 DEGREE DAY WITH LOTS OF STOP AND GO TOWN DRIVING WAS 220. OIL PRESSURE CAME UP A BIT TOO. ALSO DONT LEAVE AN OIL TRAIL WHERE EVER I GO.
