Going to have to do some home work. 73 and up is the first 2.0L four cylinders. 1.7 and 1.8 were made through out the production run.VIN starts with 437??? 2.0L six cylinder was only on 914/6 till early 72.(the VIN will start with 914xxxx).
Badging is not always correct because some people have converted to 6 cylinders as much as 3.0L or more.
Pricing is you get what you inspect. Since you seem to be in the beginning stages of looking for a car. Look to Pelican Parts 914 tech articles. There is one about buying a 914. Lots of good info. Warning these cars are addicting. Hi my name is Joe and I own a 74 2.0L

i am not exactly looking for a 914, i jsut need the engine. I am in the very beggining of perhaps building a vw baja bug for off road fun/winter car. I currently own a 944 and would like to ahve something else to drive in the winter so that i can do some work on the car without being stuck without transportation

Yeah I knew it was something like that. 1.7 1.8 what ever. Guess my fingers got carried away.
Hey I got a guy that has a 1.8L bus motor with 901 tail shift trans. 300.00 No carbs, no ALT. looks like all the sheet metal and engine mount. He was going to put it in a sand rail. We live in south Mississippi.
