Question Massive Explosion!

I know my timing is dead on, because I checked and it pulls right through all the way to redline, but when I come down from 5th 4th or now 3rd and 2nd gear it will decelerate for a while and then KABOOM backfire very loud, but just once. Then it'll decelerate normally again for a while and then another KABOOM. Usually happens when I come in around above 3K and then it will be fine from below 2.5K rpm. Could this be the deceleration valve?

Red face

Have you checked for exhaust leaks?

David has it right. You most likely have an exhaust leak.

That would make sense. Could this have to do with the every now and then it'll stutter when it's accelerating. Or the kinda gasoliny smell from when I turn on the heat that wasn't there before?

"In the old days" we would turn off the ignition while decelerating and then turn it back on after it loaded with gas. Big Bang. Cost one or 2 mufflers, but I've always liked loud cars.

So my thought: Is the ignition cutting out? It might be 'flickering' off then on.

Thumbs up

Assuming you have FI. Check your vacuum line. Your 914 is running rich. The problem is in your fuel pressure regulator. It is not functioning. That is why you have a loud bang when you decelerate. Also, check your deseleration valve for proper operation

So on the check list is:

Exhaust leak (haven't found one yet)
noticed that timing is off AGAIN! damn it.
Fuel pressure regulator (how would I do this?)
Deceleration valve (how to check that?)

definete exhaust leak

I hooked up a fuel pressure gauge, and behind the pressure regulator it reads 53 PSI regardless of RPM so I think that's good. When I press the relief vavle on the gauge the engine will speed up and the guage drops to 40 PSI. Also it holds the 40 PSI for a couple of minutes after the car shut off.

I adjusted the timing and I think the car is running allright.

But now there is black smoke when I rev the engine coming from the exhaust. What the &$^#! I'm starting to get a little frustrated with me engine. Don't make me put in a 6! Well any suggestions are welcome as ususal.

Thanks guys
