Close Ratio Gears for a 914/6 with 901

Does anyone have experience with close ratio gearing for the 914? I have a 3.2-6 that uses a 901 tranny. I recently broke 4th gear, and was considering going with closer raito gears. My initial thought was to stick with stock ratios for 1st - 3rd, change 4th to "T" (26/26), and 5th to "Y" (23/28). This is a dedicated track car, so street drivability is not important. Any thoughts or suggestions?

A standard starting point for race gears in a 901 is
M S X. You have more power than an old 911, however, so
N T Y will probably work very well for you.
Dave at GPR may have some of the ratios that you need.
I don't know his 1-800 number, But his other # is (805)549-8525.
Powerhaus II will have them, but he is always expensive.
Good luck, Steve

I actually ended up with N S Y for gears. I was going to go with N T Y, but I couldn't find a used T for less than $500! So, the difference isn't ideal, but it's close enough. Can't wait to see what it's like on the track. Maybe now the car will actually accelerate once I shift to 5th!

Here is a 901 box we raced in a tube chassis beetle powered by a 3.3L six with 13.5 cr, sprint cams, etc.: A, GA, J, O, S and a 6/29 final. It was awesome on a mile track with top speed just over 100 mph @ 7800. This is the same gearing Porsche recommends for airport circuits with taller final. Check with Carquip for more info.

Yeah, a top speed of only 100mph wouldn't do for me. I run at Watkins Glen and Pocono. With the gearing I choose, I'll be at 135mph at 6500 rpms (i have a chip in the 3.2 that gives an extra 200 rpm before the rev limiter kicks in...but other than that it's a stock 3.2).
