Post Steering Wheel Removal

How do I (safely) remove the steering wheel on
my '74 914?

I don't have any maintenance books on my car yet,
and I have a short in my gauge cluster that I
need to check out....whenver I accelerate I can
hear it arc and the tack bounces to 7k and back
down.

I'd kinda like to fix the PO's work before it
burns my car to the ground....

Assuming you have the factory wheel... Disconnect the battery, twist the horn pad counterclockwise and remove, use a 27 mm socket to remove the nut holding the steering wheel in place. Make a mark on the wheel and the shaft to help get the wheel back in the right place when you're ready to re-install. Grab wheel with both hands and pull straight off.

Get yourself a Haynes manual. You can usually find them in auto parts stores and they're pretty decent. Good luck with your project!

Well, there is one ray of hope.. At least the 914 is relatively simple when it comes to wiring. It may not seem like it now, but believe me, it could be alot worse!

I'm sure I missed it on another post, but is it a 1.8 or 2 liter? FI or carbs? Just curious...
