Question possible purchase, need some advice

hello 914 crowd!

I have a 944 and post over in those forums a bit, but I'm thinking about a 914 purchase, and wanted your opinions.

I know the usual things to look out for, etc. and I've driven a few cars, looked at lots of ads, done my research, etc.

I came across this car today at a dealer that I've bought other cars from, they're nice people. The thing that has me worried is that it has been converted to carbs. From the few things I've read about carbs on the 4cyl engines, I haven't heard many possitive comments. Here's the URL for the car, it looks nice in the pictures, and I'm going to drive it this weekend, I just wanted to know ahead of time if it's even worth looking at, because of the carbs.

I'd rather find a nice earlier 2.0, but if I can get the price down on this one, I like the color (and really like the wheels) so I'd consider buying it.

Thanks again!

Question

OK, first of all it depends on what you want to do with the car. If it's going to be a casual or daily driver, then you might want fuel injection. If you might be building up the engine (which from what I can tell from the pix is a 1.8) then carbs are the most economical means of "ingestion".

I can't tell for sure from the pictures, but it looks like it has Dellorto carbs on it. Properly sized and tuned I understand these to be pretty driveable compared to the Webers. My '74 has the 1.8 with dual Weber 40IDF's and it has a slight surge off idle, which is characteristic of the Weber IDF's. I've got them dialed in pretty well, so it's barely noticeable.

The thing to do, of course, is take the car for a good test drive. You'll know right away how well the carbs are dialed in. If the car is solid, and you don't think the carbs will be a problem, go for it! <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

Seems pricey:

- No PORSCHE on engine decklid ($ 100.00)
- The bungee cord battery holddown device.
- Non original wheels
- Aftermarket front bumper
Makes me wonder what else is wrong.
The car should be a 5 speed. If it is truely a 4 speed it may be a Bus trany. Make sure the engine SN correct. Check for rust under the battery tray and on the rockers. (under the plastic trim piece on the door sill)
No comment on the carb setup.

i think it looks good if you like the 75-76 cars.
the bumper does not look aftermarket but like an original 75-76 bumper. im sure he can find those letters or a whole new decklid for less than $100. i really like the wheels. the wheels seem to be a mahle or pedrini spin-off. i dont remember which one had that design. i would trade someone for those if i had an extra set a fuchs...
on the downside :
i dont know about the price with carbs and the weird battery tray set-up. i think many would agree it warrants further investigation.

The price is high, for sure. This place sells on consignment, and their prices are generally high, but they're flexible. (read: if I can't talk $1000 off the price, I'm not trying hard enough)

The wheels look like what I've heard called EMPIs, I like them a lot too. I'm just a sucker for black centered chrome-lipped ones (like my fuchs)

I don't know how much work I'm planning on doing to the car as far as upgrades, etc. so I think I might be better off going with a FI one.

I'm sure the 4-sp is a misprint, I'll be sure to check.

Like you said, it's all about driving it. We'll see this weekend.
