My stock 1.7 (other than carbs) runs fine until it warms up. When warm, it idles rough and one side of the motor makes a clattering noise (not to mention a huge loss in power). The clattering noise was very loud and the car ran horrible prior to a timing and valve adjustment. I think that the engine is getting real hot, but since I dont have a temp gauge, Im not sure.

What should I look for, or what could be the problem?
