Default I had a question on the Porsche crest on the 914

I have always been curious as to why I have seen some 914's with the Porsche crest while others have not had them. Why is this? Is the crest supposed to be on all models or only some? I have gotten mixed answers from different people and thought that this would be a great place to pose the question. Thanks

I was looking at the Porsche PET it is online now at Porsche.com, here is the link to the 914 parts cataloge:
http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessori...originalparts/
If you look in the cataloge part: PCG 701 105 00 is named 'badge for lacquers'. Is this the part number for the badge? If so I think then it did come from the factory. However what you said Martin does sound correct, since the ones that I have seen that do not have them don't seem to have holes drilled. I am not sure however if that part number is infact for the emblem though. I think I will call the dealer to see what they think. Thanks for input Martin.

They were not fitted by the factory. Many dealers & people fitted them afterwards and even PCA had an article on how to fit them in Up-Fixin'.

Remember they were VW-Porsches in most markets so it would not have been appropriate to have the Porsche badge.

Dealers did some strange stuff when they got 914's. In a attempt to make them more Porsche and less VW they put those ugly Porsche decals on the sides and the badges on the hood. Personally I like the 914's plan and as they came from the factory. I always get a kick out of it when people ask me what kind of car it is. "Is that a MG?"

yeah, they put those ugly PORSCHE letters above the rockers, painted them black and yellow, white and red.....plus had that goofy spoiler in the front.

Irishdriver, VWPorscheAudi marketed the 914 to the USA market as 80% of the sales were here. Identifing with the Porsche marque helped to sell the car as it was expensive compared to other similar cars.
VW sold their interests to Porsche in 74 so all 914's after that are Porsches and the 76 cars were assembled by Porsche as the Karmann plant had switched to build watercooled VW's.

Yes they were all Porsches in the US. However none of the cars had a Porsche badge on the front.
The US cars had PORSCHE on the engine cover and 914 on the back. European cars had VW-Porsche.

After '73 there were only 4 cylinder cars produced so these were still considered VW-Porsches here - regardless of where they were made.

It is practically impossible to get anyone here to accept my 914/6 as a Porsche-Porsche because the VW-Porsche identity is so strong.

BTW: which colour is your car? It looks good and I need to select a colour for my other 914/6 which is just ready for painting.

Go with Phoneix Red! That was the redish-orange color of my 914 and I LOVED it!!!!

Phoenix Red is redder than Nepal Orange which replaced Signal Orange. Its halfway between signal orange and Phoenix Red so its fairly bright.

So, all 924's are considered Audi's?? I never understood the whole VOPO thing and how they aren't Porsches even thou designed and sold as Porsches although Karmann did assemble them. 914/6's were assembled in Zuffenhausen so they are really assembled just like the 911's.
People say they are just VW's here until they drive one! haha

What's also interesting is that the 914's in Europe had Wolfsburg on there steering wheels. The one's in the US said Porsche on them.

You are right as to the Wolfsburg crest on the euro cars. A friend and I were lucky enough to drive a euro model 914 from a dealer in Minneapolis to our new dealer in Cedar Rapids Iowa back in 1969 to publicize the new dealership and it was one of a few 914's in the country before they were introduced officially. It was blue and turned quite a few heads back then. Back then I didn't even complain about the shift linkage....boy, that was a LONG time ago, but a lot of fun for a Porsche freak still in college (with no car of his own!)

(BTW, I did add the crest to the hood of my 914- I was pretty proud of it and I considered it a Porsche, even though back then some snobs in the PCA weren't so sure- I LOVED beating 911's in autocrosses with it!)

I'm guilty of drilling two holes in the hood of my 1973 914 1.7 car. I think it made the car go faster.
