Default STi swap

I ran into a guy today who was restoring his old 914, he then told me he was swapping in an STi engine. I've never heard of this being done before, anyone have more info about it?

yep.....it has been done before. i have been involved in the vw scene for almost 20 years and remember a great feature a few years back in the UK MAGAZINE VOLKSWORLD where a guy in france had put a subaru imprezza engine in the back of his VW 1303 SUPER BEETLE . there are suppliers out there if you search the net that can supply an adaptor kit to mate that sti engine to the 914 gearbox........it is a relatively straight forward conversion and shouldnt be a major hassle to do......cheers.

Wow, 300 factory stock horsepower would make a very quick 914.

How about 714 HP! ?
This link takes you to one of the best done V8 conversions on a 914 I've ever seen
Not a fan of the V8 coversion, but this guy did it right.

I'm going peripheral port 3 rotor (20b) non turbo on mine. Should be good for 450 rwhp. If I were to put a turbo back on I could get 700 hp but who needs it? I just want something that will be fun to drive at the track.

Oh, to answer the original question go to www.914club.com and do search of the forum. There are quite a few subie swaps going on at the moment.

Yeah, the 20B is a Mazda rotary engine.

The 20B is a Mazda engine but it's NOT in the RX7. It's from the Japan/Australia/New Zealand only Mazda Cosmo. The engine in the RX7 is a two rotor 13B whereas the 20B is a three rotor. It's sort of the big block of the rotary world. Extra displacement means a higher HP potential and more torque.

What's the displacement of the three rotor model?

Hmmm, a tri-rotor would have the same amount of firing impulses as a V-18 engine. Nice.

The 20B is a 2.0 litre engine. The 13B is a 1.3 litre engine. The 12A is a 1.2 litre engine. I just love the sound of the 20B in any form. I'll post a few links for you to listen to.

The Mazda Cosmo only came with an auto transmission and the stock rev limit on a 20b is 7000 rpm. Mated to a 5 speed transmission from an RX7 I have heard that 8000 - 9000 is possible however there are some concerns about the stock two piece eccentric shaft (crankshaft). Some drag racing applications rev as high as 11000 but a lot of money was spent getting there no doubt.

Here is a link to a stock 20b revving in a front clip
