There has been a 1974 914 1.8 for sale locally for quite some time now. Asking price is $1100. Car is non-running but intact, interior is all there, some rust, and has been stored for the last ten years. This is not a rotten example, and is very restorable. As far as how much rust, I have only seen pictures, but it doesn't look as bad as a lot of 914s.

Does $500 sound like a fair price? Ad states it needs a control box to run. I have very little experience with 914s, never even driven one before. Would I be getting in over my head, or might this be a good car for the price and a fun project?

In Minnesota I'd check closely for rust. Rear control arms, batery area, and rocker panels. If it looks like anything has been done I'd be very suspicious. It wouldn't be worth $500 as a rust bucket.
