Nicole,
I moved to the bay area when I was 12, with my family. Dad works for Siemens-Nixdorf. Then his Long Term Assignment contract ran out so we all moved back to Germany when I was 18 (20 now). I bought the car here when I was 17, and I took it with me to Germany and rebuilt it and all that. These pictures are on the first drive after the engine went back in. Then I wanted to go to college in the states and here I am. The car is still awaiting transport sadly.

So, you have a California registered car in Germany... That's pretty interesting! Did they ever give you a hard time regarding that? How did you manage the insurance and smog test requirements to keep it registered here while it was in Germany?

Well, I'm from a small town about 20 minutes from Paderborn. I never registered the car. Whenever I wanted to drive it for a couple of days I got one of those proof of insurance things (versicherungs doppelkarte) and went to the strassenverkehrsamt. They gave me temporary plates good for 3, 5 or 10 days.
My mom took a 2002 VW beetle with her, and that took a lot of changing the lights and who knows what, plus all the TUV and whatnot.

Well... it's still easier to take a US car to Germany than a German car to the US. I used to think us Germans are the leaders in bureaucracy, but I think the US government certainly tops that when it comes to importing vehicles... Because those Germans are really, really crazy, driving those unsafe polluters with no speed limit, right?

Here's my 914/6 on our way to winning 2nd in Class 1 in the Porsche Deutsche Meisterschaft - maybe I should fit anti roll bars.
Its an original six, first sold in France, then sold to England, and I brought it to Germany in January.

Yes, never restored - carries a lot of wax inside - the only non-standard parts are the wheels, which are from a '74 Carrera. The rear wheel arches were "pushed out" an little by the previous owner to fit these wheels but I won't comment on the standard of workmanship.
Still, the drifts you can have with 8 year old tyres are great !!!
